I loved the character in spite of their flaws and negative aspects. I loved the ending, Rodia was consumed by the city and by new ideas, he ended being eaten by his own mind, and in the end his surroundings and the people he hated were the answer to his suffering. Tortured poet tbh.

Very readable, although I have a feeling that I owe the translator a good deal. The prose is quick and easy to follow. The themes occasionally got murky since I'm not as familiar with Russian history and social movements, but overall I really enjoyed the deep dives into each characters' psyches. The ending was a bit of a surprise turnaround for me, but it was fulfilling.
I gave it a three quarter star cause I guess Dostoyevsky was a good writer
this book made me want to hit myself repeatedly with a hammer
everytime I opened it I got a headache
I’m sorry I’m not enough of an intellectual to understand but I simply couldn’t
Nothing makes sense
There is no plot just the inner thoughts of a mad man

I like this book in so far that it is a serious exploration of the various political themes and intellectual discourses plaguing a modernizing Russia. I don't buy the author's religious method but I fully understand why given his life experience he might have reached this conclusion.
A few knocks on this book for being a product of its time, but I do genuinely appreciate the richness of late 19th St. Petersburg. It feels like the setting is a character in of itself.
