I remember loving the books in grade school and wishing I was able to read them all and I now that I have read one as an adult and decided they were much better as a kid. Now the things she says and thinks just seem kinda cheesy.

I find the writing a bit choppy, but the story is interesting enough to read with my 8 year old. She LOVED it! She loved that she understood all of the allusions to this novel that were mentioned in Judy Moody Girl Detective.

I have always loved Nancy Drew. I think I probably read all of the series that had been published through the sixties. I needed a book that made me feel nostalgic and I immediately went to Nancy. Only this time I listened to the audiobook. Imagine hearing Nancy’s voice after all these years! She sounded just like I imagined she would. The story was as good as it ever was and the audiobook was well done.

was fun, didn't really like the style at times but ig it's just bc it's old lol
i liked the mystery, although it wasn't the most engaging thing to me. i probably wouldn't read it again, but i might read other nancy drew books
relatively quick read - i put it on hold for a while (literally took me a year) but read the majority of it in one night at a birthday party lol, and then finished it kinda slowly but surely

Satisfactory.

As a tween, I loved these books... Then I re-read them as an adult and realized how AWFUL they are - the privileged beautiful blonde (Nancy), her heavier, not so smart, superficial best friend (a brunette, of course), the impossible perfection of Nancy (example: whatever skills a mystery requires, she magically acquires them with no effort; in one book, she must step in for a ballerina in a show and does so promptly although we've never observed her take a ballet class), the absolute whiteness of all characters, the valuation of wealth and the cultural supremacy of "western" values, etc.

Although I think these books deserve less than 1 star, I'll have to defer at least partially to my enjoyment of them at the age at which they were meant to be read. Still, if I ever have a child, I'll be sure to talk these through critically with her/him if they ever pick this up (I won't encourage them to do so but I will never censor books).
