I feel pretty ignorant giving this book a low rating because it's clearly considered a classic and has resonated with a lot of people. Maybe it's because I don't speak a word of Spanish, but I was very lost for large swaths of this book, including the majority of the poetry that makes up the second half. There were portions of the book that were very powerful and resonant, and some parts of the early chapters were very interesting and helpful to me. But then it would go off in weird directions and I would have no idea what was going on. I wish I understood it enough to even say that I see why it's a classic, but that it just isn't for me. I can't, so I'm just going to honestly rate my personal experience of reading this book, which is that there were some great passages but it wasn't worth slogging through the whole book for them.
