this book was kinda meh to me. I didn’t really like any of the characters except for Evelyn. The main character was so naive and just was unlikable. I also didn’t buy the romance, it was totally instalove and I just don’t believe how they just love each other SO MUCH when he constantly is gone and she knows he’s out with another woman. There was absolutely no development of their relationship, it was just immediately “I love you” and I’m sitting here like

I loved this glimpse into life in Ghana. The culture and traditions of the people came alive before the reader. Afi starts out as a sweet girl who only wants to please her family and matures before us into a smart confident entrepreneur and artist. I loved her journey and the romance between her and Eli. I felt the ending was a little abrupt and would have liked maybe another 70 pages exploring the twist at the end.

I enjoyed learning more about Ghana, but I didn't love the plot. I didn't find myself rooting for Afi.

This book was so good. I was engrossed in it, and I truly empathized with Afi's plight. There's still a dismaying worldwide epidemic of women being expected to abdicate their agency, ignore their pain, swallow their dignity, and deny their own desires so that men can have what they want. It's discouraging how hard women have to fight to prove our own humanity.

That all sounds pretty depressing, and I don't want anyone cheating themselves of the experience of reading this book, as it is ultimately an uplifting story.

Very interesting book about a country I don't know much about. I liked following Afi to see if she will manage to change anything in the end. A bit of a Cinderella story conflicting with modern life.
It reads easily enough, and when I read it, I flew through the pages, but when I put it down, it took me a while each time to pick it up again. Still recommend to read this book!
