Los Angeles was inhabited by superheroes working to make the city a better place. Then- the unthinkable happens. People are dying all over the world, but their corpses aren't staying that way.
The Mount has been turned into a fortress for the survivors, protected by the Mighty Dragon and a handful of other heroes. If only the zombies were the only threat outside of the altered film studio.
The humor in this book reminded me of another one of my favorite zombie series: Zombie Fallout by Mark Tufo. Throw in superheroes (and the fact that this book discusses Doctor Who), and here is a book I could not put down! It was absolutely brilliant. This is a perfect spooky season read.

Superheroes fighting zombies, a winning combination!
Told in then and now chapters--as the outbreak occurs, and after, the survivors holed up and still fighting to survive against the exes (ex-humans.) Meet Stealth, Gorgon, Regenerator, Cerberus, Zzzap, and the Mighty Dragon, ordinary humans who gained extraordinary powers just before the ex-humans appeared. They've survived, and even superpowers can't prevent the same problems everyone faces in the zombie apocalypse. Food, water, shelter, and not getting bitten.
Darkly comic, with fascinating insights into the mind of the heroes, this is a book for superhero and zombie fans alike.

Super heroes. Zombies. Armageddon. Patient Zero. The idea has lots of merit, the execution probably could use a bit more tightening up. But I am not a zombie fan. I'm probably one of the few Americans left who have not see The Walking Dead. It doesn't scare me or gross me out. I just find the concept tedious. It's basically an unstoppable virus and the conclusion is we're a going to become one and the roam the world endlessly? It's boring in its inevitable ending. Watching (or in this case listening to) a losing battle is not my definition of fun.
I'd have rather listened to a sequel to 14. Not sure if I will get the rest in this series. But it wasn't horrible so it was worth the $5 I paid. Zombie fans may enjoy it a lot more.

I'm glad I ignore reviews until after I've read a book because I'm surprised that the top two reviews on a book with an average rating of 3.88 are both two star reviews (one which reads like a much higher star rating than two, BTW). Also...because I liked this book. A lot.
I discovered this book by accident. I was in the stacks looking for cozy mysteries to fill a display, noticed [b:Ready Player One|9969571|Ready Player One|Ernest Cline|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1406383612s/9969571.jpg|14863741] on the shelf, grabbed it for a different display, and Ex-Heroes fell to the floor. Clearly the book wanted me to read it -- it jumped out at me!
I picked it up and discovered blurbs by two authors I've read and enjoyed previously: [a:Mira Grant|3153776|Mira Grant|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1380320279p2/3153776.jpg] and [a:Ernest Cline|31712|Ernest Cline|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1310753539p2/31712.jpg]. Any blurb that says the contents inside are a mash-up of The Walking Dead meets The Avengers will make me want to find out for myself. I forced every co-worker that was here that day and my husband to read the description -- it sounded so good. One co-worker tried to bring me down by telling me this superheroes/zombies mash-up already existed as a comic book (Marvel Zombies, I think)...but I'm not really into superhero comics so I wouldn't know if something like that existed.
Anyway, if you've made it this far then you know that I was exited about finding this book. It just sounded like a fun read.
And. It. Was.
We're first introduced to Katie, a girl who is patrolling the wall at the Mount -- a safe haven for the non-dead humans -- and St. George, a hero who has just come back from his own patrol. The story then unfolds back and forth between now -- apocalyptic, zombie-filled world -- and then -- before the "ex" virus took over. I loved the variety of perspectives in the "then" chapters. We were able to see the beginnings of the virus and get backstory on the heroes; some as they were just discovering their powers and others a little later into society's collapse. Most of the characters were pretty great and the dialogue was snappy -- except for Stealth, probably on purpose, but Stealth's dialogue came across as unnatural and not at all how someone actually speaks.
Overall, a fun genre mash-up. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series!

DNF at 80%. I know, I know, why not just power through? Sadly I'd been struggling since page 1, and I should have hit the eject button much earlier. Probably not a bad book, just a ridiculously bad fit for someone who thrives on strong characterization and intriguing plot lines.
It was okay... but it should have been excellent. It had all the ingredients. But everyone was too shallow and staying true to their character. The narration was really annoying, dropping either the male or female voice in for dialogue no matter which character we were getting the POV of.
I can't not enjoy an adventure with super heroes and zombies, but I can't ignore the inattention to or ignorant treatment of race and the unwelcome and unnecessary ogling of the female form, even when it's a rotting zombie, e.g., "Her shirt sagged open to reveal a black bra and a trail of blood ran down her torso from her neck, accenting her tiny breasts." That said, the story has the characters treating each other with respect across gender, and the female heroes and fighters are bad ass. If the Avengers faced a zombie plague and the story was written grindhouse/pulp style...
Zombies and superheroes
Great book. The Fall of civilization to zombies is inevitable, even with superheroes in play. Looking forward to the next one

A unique twist on both zombies and super heroes. Not incredible, but really worth the read.
