Oh my God, this was so entertaining!
This is a (another) modern take on Pride and Prejudice but this story adds a magical realism storyline.
Emma wants to use the old, abandoned school library to form a club with her friends. Her father is high up in the school’s administration, so her request is easily approved.
She finds a magical book in the library. Thankfully she finds it before Darcy shows up and demands that she stop using the library. His family owns the castle where the school is, so his word is final.
At first, Emma is just trying to get her library back. But soon she realizes that there’s something strange about the book she found. It reads like a diary but when she adds a note herself, she realizes that writing in the book actually makes events happen.
She gets a little power hungry for a bit but then realizes the diary might hold the key to Darcy’s sister’s disappearance four years earlier. The more she reads, the more she learns about a mysterious faun creature.
This book was quite exciting. It hit a good stride and the action did not slow down until a nice resolution was reached at the end.
I very much enjoyed this. I definitely have to read The Book Jumper now!

The Forgotten Book was nice little escape back to high school days with a mix of fairy tales and mystery.

the influence of austen is obvious, from names to characteristics, but i really enjoyed the story. the reveal was surprising for me and so worth it, and the ending seemed fitting.
This book took me a while to get into. At times, the story was kind of slow, there wasn’t enough character development, and some of the writing seemed very elementary.
Other than that, I found this book to still be an interesting read. Some of the magical and fantasy elements to this book made it a good quick read. However, I found that I liked the idea of this book more than I liked the actual book.

This book was so good! We follow a 16 year old girl named Emma who vows to make this school year her year, going to get her crush and become the most popular girl. She then while cleaning out an old library finds an old book, and finds out its a diary and she decides to write in it, only to find it has power to make happen whatever you write happen. She meets Darcy who has come to the school to investigate the disappearance of his sister. Emma isn't the only one who knows about the book, and it could be dangerous if it were to fall into the wrong hands. Her only ally is Darcy, whom she cannot stand. This book is magical and beautifully written, and it is a Pride and Prejudice retelling with a magical element. I took a star off only for the pacing, sometimes the pacing was a bit slow, but once you sat and read it read like a charm.
"Was I seriously sitting here with an antique book wondering whether there was really such a thing as magic?"
NO WAY!!! Literally, this is how I felt in the last maybe 40-50 pages?! Talk about red herring and double meanings. This was a neat idea with the enchanted chronicle and I loved how the author teases us with previous entries sprinkled throughout. It added suspense.
I docked a star because I'm on the fence with Darcy and Emma and the start to their relationship. I know it was Pride and Prejudice-esque, which actually was well done EXCEPT for that awkward babbling speech. And climbing the window (this spoils nothing, it's literally this awkward realization of really? *facepalm*).
In all though, once the pace pick up mid-book, I couldn't put it down, especially those last 50 or so pages. Whew, I am still reeling!
