Gläser weaves such magical stories. I can't wait to see what she writes next. Her stories are thoughtful, poignant, and enchanting. Moreover, I really appreciated how she wove in fairy tales and that piece of German heritage and legacy. Her writing is simply stunning.
3.5 out of 5 stars.
I expected more from this to be honest, I think the writing style didn't draw me in as much as I would have liked.
It's a bit like Hogwarts meets Death Note meets Jane Eyre. However it isn't as well written as I would have hoped for, and I had such high hopes for this.
I wanted to be swept away, and I was left not feeling too much either way about it to be honest.

A play on Pride and Prejudice... liked it, but her other book The Book Jumper was better.

This book has been all I've thought about all day. Like it's seriously good. I love books that are so much like real life and have that slight fantasy element. I highly recommend this book
Girl finds a magical book, chaos ensues...
Initial Thoughts: Whoa, these people are in high school? This felt more like a middle-grade book to me.
Characters: 2 – Forgettable, like I can barely remember their names forgettable, and Emma, the main character, was super immature, and quite honestly not all that likable.
Plot: 2 – I had very high hopes for this one, the synopsis sounded very interesting, but it was a letdown.
Originality: 3 – Eh, finding a magical book, that been done, but the whole legend thing, while I didn't really enjoy it, it was original. The romance, however, not original at all...
Predictability: 3 – I had no doubt how this book would end. But, to be fair there were a few strange twists.
Romance: 1 – This was basically Pride and Prejudice if Elizabeth was the MOST ANNOYING person in the world. I mean the guy's name is Darcy, so we aren't even trying to hide it. I really just didn't get it.
Overall: 2

"Just kidding! Say more! What?"
Despite the slightly odd description, I gave this book a try and found it rather charming. It reminded me of a [a:Kerstin Gier|298438|Kerstin Gier|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1276520835p2/298438.jpg] book, minus Gier's super immature heroines. (Yay!) Is it just the nature of German YA to sound similar? IDK, GO READ THE BOOK AND TELL ME.
I loved the heroine, Emma. She's spunky & sunny and somehow breaks the usual YA heroine mold. She felt like a real extrovert. She also uses her brain and figures things out fairly fast. I love her relationship with her friends (I'm always going to be a sucker for strong female friendships) and with her Dad. Pretty cute.
The fairy tale/fantasy element also added immensely to the story. It took a bit to get going but, especially as the book neared its climax, it really developed things. Very creative and imaginative!
Yet the very imaginative and creative nature of the faun and the book leaves me extra frustrated with the thing that drew me to The Forgotten Book in the first place...the P&P retelling. Or the Jane Austen references in general. They weren't needed. This author has plenty of originality to tell her own story. No Darcy needed. Copying the romance from P&P just made things predictable. I like the way author tweaked his first proposal. That seemed more realistic....but still kind of stupid (and unlikely). Darcy and Frederick echoed their literary counterparts too closely. They lost the originality of the other characters.
I will keep an eye out for more from this author! Thank you for sharing, Michelle!

**THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR BOTH THE FORGOTTEN BOOK AND THE BOOK JUMPER**
Mechthild Gläser did a phenomenal job writing The Book Jumper. The romance, action, adventure, and humor were blended perfectly. I was expecting the same from The Forgotten Book, but I was a little disappointed with this one. I don’t even think you could really mark on of its genres as romance because the book focused more on the magical book.
Also, I found this book just a tiny bit predictable. The MOMENT that Emma wrote she wished Darcy would choke on books, I KNEW he was going to choke on books!!!! I was a little scared he would die, seeing how The Book Jumper ended. I guess that you could say this book was happier when it came to endings.
I’d like to know the legal drinking age in Europe because there’s a scene in the book where she goes on a date and gets drunk. Emma is only 16, but I heard a rumor that the drinking age in Europe is 18. How did she even get the alcoholic beverage if she’s not the legal drinking age?!?!?!?!
Alrighty, that’s all I had to say for now, other than I’m very excited for the next book that is translated into English by this author!!!!
