1. Wade - juvenile, short sighted, addicted and depressed. Why wasn’t I enthusiastic to read more about his questionable character growth? (Refer to previous sentence.)
2. The retro pop culture which is continually thrust into (what feels like) every page. I guess I am in a different place than I was with book 1, because this style, today, is annoying to me.

Basically RPO all over again, except Wade is way too rich and has to win back Samantha.
I thought the racism and transphobia/LGBTQIAphobia of the first book wouldn't have been there, and I was wrong.
Possible spoilers ahead:
Wade literally thinks he knows what being trans is like because he experienced intercourse from both the pov of a woman and a man with the ONI headset, Non-binary people are only treated a sexually interesting category.
Plus, for some reason it was necessary to say that Japan is now an "underpopulated" country and therefore Shoto decided to "reproduce" right after marriage.
What?
People aren't animals.
The quest was boring, the riddles way too easy. In RPO, at least it looked like Wade knew what he was doing.
Samantha is said to be extremely selfless (and defined "crazy" for this reason) and Wade is just insanely selfish, but this isn't portrayed as something necessarily wrong. The book makes it look like this is who he is and you have to understand it.

The first 20% were a slog but after that it’s similar to the first book - pure science fiction epic. Super fun & a great audiobook!
I read ready player one as a teenager and loved it. Reading this one as an adult, I see all the flaws and issues I didn't pick up on as a kid. This was fun at times, it was nice to see more world building since this is a cool concept. It was a mistake to make Wade the main character again. It ended up being very repetitive and boring. I had low expectations and they were somehow still not met. But I did finish it so it gets 2 stars.
I don't know why this book got so much hate.
It isn't as good as the first one. But I still enjoyed the plot and the all the quests. The main characters from the first book were there. I love Samantha!
The main thing that annoyed me is that we have a new character- L0hengrin. She is a pretty important character to the plot, and she is not developed at all. We barely learn anything about her. She is mentioned a few times and just enough to help the main characters. I feel like she could have been super interesting if the author did her justice.

While I enjoyed Ready Player One - as much as one can enjoy pop culture references being throw left and right - its sequel is one tedious slog. It just lacks the novelty and the fun the first book had.
After all the criticism that Cline received after RPO and Armada, you'd think he would do something different, but instead he doubled down on the wrong things. This brings nothing new to the table, and even undoes some of the charm and good from the first book.
Hopefully they can rewrite this for the movie adaptation.
