Cline writes engaging characters with depth and grace, but a rehash of the previous novel’s storyline is a bit much for me.
3.5
If you liked the first one, but wish it had more sci-fi concepts and even more 80s references, you'll probably like this one. The concepts were fun albeit a bit predictable. The name-dropping got old, except for the parts where they were droning on nostalgically about stuff I am also nostalgic for, in which case I loved it. So, your enjoyment really just depends on how much you have in common with our protagonist or his friends and heroes (or in reality, the author). If you don't know much about movies, for example, expect an education.
Shoutout to the library for the hookup! \m/ ^_^ \m/

Just like it’s predecessor, I was immediately sucked into the world and the plot worked much like Dorothy’s whirlwind—sweeping me up into a world not my own. However, I feel that the author gravely mishandled Art3mis’s arc. I kept getting frustrated with how she seemingly lost her own voice—which was a valuable voice of conflict—without any real good reason. She just suddenly seems to change her mind about nearly every incredibly independent and well-reasoned decision she’s made in the first 100 pages. Then, the ending hit and I was even more frustrated. It seemed like none of the characters learned anything from what they went through and I was pulling my hair out wondering why. Yet again, Cline creates a wondrous world that swept me away, but then he makes some critical errors that make some of the most crucial moments in the book fall very, very flat.

Didn’t dislike it, but never hooked my attention and had to return it to the library before I found the will to finish it
Look, I know Cline's books are hardly the last word in quality literature by RP1 was great fun. RP2 was too but, in my mind, to a lesser extent.
My primary areas of concern were...
* There were too many times when parts of the story appeared to have been done in such a way that they would be good in the inevitable movie.
* Whereas the first book revelled in all sorts of pop culture, this one concentrates too much on one film director, one musician and one book/film franchise. If you don't know them very well, a lot is going to be lost. That was the case for me.
* The ending felt rushed and, well, mostly what you expected too.
Otherwise, it was a fun read.

This was actually better than I thought after reading the reviews when it was published. It probably helps that I wasn't a fan of the first book. I liked it but didn't love it.
So what about the sequel?
Well, the story is - unfortunately - based on the same exact formula with a hunt for special items. That is a turn off and was disappointing.
But. I liked the story behind - the reason why there is another hunt. Both the villain threat (even though it's a bit cliché) and the emotional part. That was much more interesting than the first book. And it also raised some important ethical questions.
Unfortunately some of the quests was... boring. I mean, there was a lot of the games I didn't knew in the first book, but it didn't matter that much because most of them were only mentioned briefly. If you're not into the themes for the quests in the sequel then you probably will get bored. I was in two of the last ones even though I wasn't completely unaware of the subjects.
The ending was fine. Some will call it a happy ending, but not me. But all in all I think it was true to the story.

Great continuation from #1, but a little slower.
