This was a very slow start, so much so that I almost gave up. Not as rivetting asthe original, but ok.

Great book with lots of nostalgia and I really enjoyed the chapter on John Hughes. Overall, not as perfect as the first book but a solid follow up.

I loved “Ready Player One,” so I was excited to learn Cline had written a sequel. But did the world need this sequel? Eh. It’s a tough act to follow, and there were some high points in RP2, but overall not as compelling as the original novel.

..what? The storyline was somehow the same as RP1 but not as cool (and kind of boring). Even the Tolkien bit could not save it for me.

DNF

I gave it over three hours on audiobook, but even Wil Wheaton narrating couldn’t save this. Meandering. No clear plot by chapter 5. The first four chapter were more like a Wikipedia article of “what do nerds like” than a plot. I just couldn’t stomach the idea of another 10 hours.

Super duper similar to Ready Player One, but that was such a fun book who cares, right?

3.5 stars

I wanted to like this. I never read the first one, just saw the movie, but this one was just a bunch of trivia dumped into a book, like Cline just wants to make sure Gen Z knows about John Hughes. Sure, being Gen X helped me figure out where a few of the clues were going to end up, but that just made the constant slog of "omg!" "holy shit!" "no WAY" even more tedious.

Or maybe I'm just too old for this one. It be a fun movie with a great soundtrack though...
