I was looking forward to this book. I have read all of #RachelHawkins books and have enjoyed them, but unfortunately this one wasn’t as good as the others. I enjoyed the multiple POV, but the ending left me feeling underwhelmed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

A modern take on Jane Eyre meets Gone Girl. Not as original or surprising as it could (should ?) have been, but still a solid read.

This is the worst book I have ever read. There is no thrill, no suspense, and NOTHING happens in this book… at all.

The title basically gives away what is happening… and no that’s not even a spoiler because you find that out in like chapter 2 of the book.

There is no guessing in this story, the author gives you everything you need to know. It’s like finding out who the killer is from the start and then reading about a random girl’s life story that adds nothing to the plot…

I’ve been told it’s a remake of a classic but I can’t imagine that the classic is worse than this retelling.

Also as a Republican, I didn’t appreciate her bias and degrading remarks towards that political party.

Meh...saw it all coming...ending was dumb

This was incredibly clever and a great rendering of Jane Eyre. I loved all the inside remarks that readers of Jane Eyre will devour. I definitely will be reading more from Rachel Hawkins.

Oh man, y'all. This book has been at the tip top of my most anticipated list from the moment that I heard that it was a modern-gothic-mystery retelling of Jane Eyre. I wanted SO BADLY to love it, but ultimately I kinda feel like it was just okay? It wasn't a terrible book, but throughout the entire story I kept finding myself wishing that it would do more, or go a little bit further and it ultimately just never really hit the notes that I was hoping it would hit. I will say, if you do decide to read this one, I listed to the audiobook and I thought the narration was fantastic, but the story as a whole was just... a little lacking for me and I am big, big sad because I thought this was going to be an all-time favorite for me. Here's hoping that Rachel Hawkin's next adult book will hit a little harder for me!

I had so much fun with this novel. This is truly an outstanding book.

Jane has fled a difficult past in Arizona and is hiding out in Alabama where she gets a job walking the dogs of the ultra-rich in Thornfield Estates. She meets Eddie Rochester, a handsome, wealthy widower whose wife drown in a boating accident with her best friend several months earlier. He takes an interest in Jane, even though she’s plain and nothing like the polished women of the neighborhood. She does her best to fit in, but just about everyone is hiding something, also trying to be who people expect them to be.

This is a super fast, twisty read. Recommend.

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this novel, which RELEASES JANUARY 5, 2021.

The Wife Upstairs takes a different take on who did it mystery. The readers are given one perspective, that of Jane, they are introduced to two more narratives that hold the most twisted details. While the structure and idea of the novel seem great the execution of it wasn't as successful. The characters, all of them, are horrible people and don't really have qualities that redeem them or even lend to be liked by the reader. At times the reader is left feeling as if the story has no plan. The twist is very much surprising but may not be worth the work you have to put in to get to them

Hawkins is just a phenomenally fun hang.

(I love Jane Eyre beyond reason, and I could take or leave the references to it. There were some fun winks to to the classic here, but I wouldn't go into this for that reason alone. It's a mystery/thriller, first and foremost.)
