Hawkins is just a phenomenally fun hang.

(I love Jane Eyre beyond reason, and I could take or leave the references to it. There were some fun winks to to the classic here, but I wouldn't go into this for that reason alone. It's a mystery/thriller, first and foremost.)

booooo

I read a funny line on Facebook recently and it said, “Finished my wife upstairs and I wasn’t impressed.” Of course, punctuation was key with that sentence but it got me interested in the book so when Libby had it available I decided to give it a whirl. I drive nearly 2 hours a day just doing school pick up and drop off, not including work, so I have a near constant need for audiobooks.

The book comes in at just under 9 hours and it took me to hour 7.5 for me to have that gasp moment. That moment when a suspense plot hits and you’re like “OMG that is where the author is going!” moment. Normally I can see a plot coming faster than this, but somehow I missed the earlier clues and this is why the book is going to get a heavy star amount from me.

My only complaint is the ending and that seems to be a theme with me lately in the suspense thriller genre. Once the plot and AH-HA moment clicked the ending came too fast. It also wasn’t solved with a neat little bow which makes me wonder if the author plans to write a sequel. To be honest, I’d read one. I also plan to grab the author's most current release, Reckless Girls, soon because I enjoyed her style of storytelling.

It’s getting a 4 out of 5 stars from me.

Meh. The Wife Upstairs was so convoluted with problematic characters it was difficult to keep reading at times. Jane (aka: Helen) has a secret past so she convinces a man, (Eddie) who also has a secret past, to marry her. Eddie is *widowed by a wife (Bea) who- you guessed it- has a secret past. There’s a murder. Maybe a double murder? It’s just a lot. The best part of this book was the catty neighborhood women who provided some predictability and lightened the storyline. I would pass this one up.

If there is one book that I love above almost all others it’s Jane Eyre. So I’m always game to find a retelling. I like that the author keeps many of the original names and some key features of the original factors.

I love that Jane in this book is also extremely intelligent and does what she has to do to survive. I also really enjoyed that the mystery was on par with the original Jane Eyre, which I wouldn’t call a thriller (definitely wouldn’t call this book a thriller either), but it was well done over all.

It was a fun read for sure!

thought this was a good read. there were a few twists throughout that got me. i kinda wish the ending left me with a little more than it did

these "thrillers" are so very typical and just like those cheesy movies you see that are supposed to be scary but are just kind of funny. this one was no different-still entertaining enough though, i suppose!

Another great read for this month! I really enjoyed this book. It had a very “Gone Girl” vibe I wouldn’t say it was predictable, because I definitely didn’t see how everything would come together and play out. However, I also knew it wasn’t going to end the way one would suspect. I felt whiplash trying to keep up with all of the lies and unreliable narrators.

Loved it but predictable

I am not going to lie, I've read A LOT of thrillers here recently - too many to count! And when I say this has got to be one of the ABSOLUTE BEST ones I've read in a long time, I mean it! The Wife Upstairs was so incredibly good and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

This thriller literally had it ALL. I was so intrigued to find out more and more as the plot unraveled. I found it so interesting that each character wasn't necessarily likable, yet I found myself still wanting Jane to get the life she so desperately dreamed of. I flew through these pages eagerly wondering what would happen next. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, I was proved wrong.

I give The Wife Upstairs 5 HUGE STARS! This thriller was so incredibly well written by Rachel Hawkins. Each character developed at a steady pace, and the twists and turns in the plot were expertly placed. I blew through this book because the anticipation and the build-up was so fascinating. This was my first novel by Hawkins and it will surely not be my last. This was hands down one of the best thrillers/mysteries I've ever read!

Thank you to St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for providing me this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
