This one didn't work for me. It was silly and predictable, and I disliked all of the characters, but not even enough to enjoy hating them. The Jane Eyre connection wasn't a positive; it just left me comparing this book's Jane to Bronte's much more interesting heroine.
I finished it because the audio performances were great and I needed something to listen to while walking to and from work, but nothing in the book particularly surprised me.

I really liked this! I unfortunately expected the first big twist, but the ending was still pretty satisfying!
My second read from this author, and just like the first, I devoured this book in only two days!
After I read ‘The Heiress’, I knew I had to read another book by this author. I am so glad I did because this book was so good!
You think you know what happening but then the right is pulled out from under you, more than once!
I cannot wait to read more by this author, she’s definitely become one of my favorites.

It had been a while since I read a twisty thriller like this! The Wife Upstairs was a quick, mildly thrilling read. I enjoyed it overall and the ending, while not quite shocking, was satisfying. This is a retelling of Jane Eyre, which I read many, many years ago and really need to revisit.
There are plenty of interesting characters in this book. Jane, our protagonist, was such a scrapper yet still likable. I have to root for a character like that even if everything she does isn't exactly legal. Eddie is more of a mystery. I really didn't get to know him well and had no idea what he was capable of. Finally, we have Bea, the wife upstairs. I thought the story got more compelling when Bea's narrative started. She brings all kinds of craziness. These three are all out for their own gain and it's a guessing game about who will end up on top.
The Upstairs Wife makes for an easy escape read. The pacing is quick and I flew through it. It is not a book that will stay with me long though. I would recommend it for anyone who wants a twisty tale that isn't super dark and depressing.

A modern take on Jane Eyre, where the dog walker falls in love with the master. I struggled to feel for Jane as she tried way too hard to accomplish… what, exactly? Her true motivations, outside of escaping her past, were never really clear, even in the end.
Everyone is hiding something, but the reveals are not all worth the hype. I was left with more questions than answers, and it is not clear to me that things were thought all the way through.
2.5 stars rounded up. I liked the premise, but the execution fell a little flat for me.

Big Thank You to @stmartinspress and @netgalley for allowing me to read and review this one! Out on January 5th!
Okay so, this book first caught my attention because I loved the cover, you don’t usually see pastels on the thriller/mystery section lol
But then I found out it was a modern retelling of Jane Eyre which is one of my absolute favorite classics so I knew I had to read it.
I read this in one day, it was everything I could have hoped.
Rachel had plenty of the Jane Eyre vibes that I loved while also making the story her own so I actually wasn’t sure what was going to happen next.
I also loved the Dark and Mysterious personality Jane had in this book. I love a narrator you aren’t sure you can trust.
Who knew this well known story could make such a fun domestic thriller.

Yikes. This story immediately intrigued me and made me want to continue listening. That is until I got about 40-50% of the way through and was like “Ugh, this book”. I did keep with it and ended up finishing it and honestly, I wish I just gave up on it all together. I figured out the ‘twist’ within the first five chapters and sometimes that isn’t a deal breaker for me. However, when this book wasn’t thrilling whatsoever and it is filled with hateable characters it definitely ruined the book for me. There was nothing really keeping me listening to this story other than the fact that I was listening at work/driving. If I wasn’t using the audiobook version I would have definitely DNF. I will say the narrators did a good job and did bring some life to the characters. Overall this book wasn’t for me. It felt too simple, too repetitive, and way too slow. If you are a fan of this author or are curious, I say check it out! Just because a book didn’t work for me doesn’t mean you might not fall in love with it.

I wasn’t sure about this book as it’s a retelling of Jane Eyre, and I wasn’t really all that fond of that classic when I had to read it for an English class in college. All I remember is not being able to understand why red was such a strong symbol.
Now I’m wondering about the plot all over again because this book was fast-paced mystery that had me saying, “What?” Over and over again. Jane is the neighborhood dog-walker until Eddie asks her out. A whirlwind romance clouds her suspicions about his wife who disappeared about six months ago.
We hear from Bea too, and although I should have expected it, I didn’t. Bea is kind of a B.
It’s a mystery. There’s a murder. It’s super fast-paced. It was a delight, as much as a book that kind of creeps you out can be.
