3.5 stars for me. This was an easy, fast paced read with some plot twists fairly easy to guess. Not an "edge of your seat" thriller by any stretch.
I really enjoyed The Wife Upstairs! At fIrst, I thought it was going to be a cliche, run of the mill domestic thriller, but I got so much more. I didn't expect any of the events that happened the last quarter of the book. The characters were interesting and the setting delightfully southern. I would definitely recommend. Thank you, NetGalley, for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I have feelings. I'm not entirely sure what they are.
On the one hand, this is a quick read and a great study in suspense. On the other, I had a hard time adjusting to the idea of Jane Eyre/Bell as a kleptomaniac. Granted it's been A WHILE since I've read the original. I will say that if this were a Reddit AmITheAsshole post, the response would be Everyone'sShittyHere.
I have a feeling there are quite a few subtle things I'm missing because it's been FOREVER since I read the original. I liked the nod of Jane having the last name Bell since that's a pen name for Charlotte Bronte. I remember a lot of the names from the book but not who the characters actually were. Using the foster care system rather than an orphanage was excellent--and apt.

Spoiler
I suppose I wanted to be freer to root for Jane, but it was hard because she, Eddie, and Be a were all manipulators. Or if I couldn't root for Jane, I wanted to root for Bea. From a technical standpoint, the twist is delicious, but...Bertha always deserved better, too.
Reader, I didn't love it. I was super keen to read this when it was recommended to me, as I'm a sucker for retellings of the classics, and the OG Jane Eyre is one of my favourite reads. But something about this one didn't work for me as much as I wanted it to. The good parts were that I read it over a couple of hours one afternoon, as it was engaging enough to keep reading. I did appreciate the links to the original novel, and so the thought behind it and attention to detail is admirable. But it was a bit flat. It didn't feel like a tense thriller to me, and it certainly didn't feel like a Southern gothic, atmospheric tale. In fact, for a few chapters early on, I genuinely thought it was set in the UK. I found all of the characters to be incredibly unlikeable, including Jane, which is problematic for the main character. I felt they all deserved each other and they were all toxic! And Eddie had no charm, and I didn't buy the relationship between him and Jane. No chemistry. The concept was promising, but it didn't follow through. I was a little disappointed. It wasn't terrible but I've read better retellings. It felt to me like fan fiction, which is to say it's obvious that the author loved the original novel, but this one was definitely in the New Adult genre. I can see how it would fit in the Girl on the Train - Woman in the Window style of writing and would appeal to that audience.

I thought this book was entertaining and was a quick listen. But the substance of the book holds me back from giving it a four star rating.
