Complicated
If it was ever possible to find a kindred spirit in a book character, I think I found mine in Anne.
I can’t even begin to word just what a delight this book was to read, and I can’t believe I was intimidated by it for so long! (This is your sign - go read those classics you’ve always wanted to read!)
Anne of Green Gables is such a wholesome, joyful, and inspiring classic. We follow Anne as she grows up, and finds her place within a wondeful found family and the wonderful small countryside of Avonlea.
All of the characters were vivid and charming in their own ways and I could easily picture each and every one of them. The descriptions of the beautiful Avonlea landscapes were poetic and evocative, and just an utter joy to read.
It was wonderfully inspiring how Anne managed to hold onto such a positive and grateful outlook on life. She had such a drive to make the best out of every situation and to assume the best of people. As someone who struggles with getting bogged down by the things of this life and by my worries and cares, Anne’s character was a breath of fresh air. She has her moments of trouble and despair, but always finds a way to let it strengthen her. Her grateful and mindful outlook on life is refreshing and inspiring, and will stay with you long after you finish the book.
I loved how baffled Marilla and Matthew are by Anne’s exhuberant personality and her wild imagination in the beginning, and how quickly they came to realise they couldn’t possibly live without her. This was especially satisfying to see for Marilla’s character, as she faces the pressure of raising Anne and tends to keep her emotions hidden within herself.
Lastly, I loved Matthew’s character from the first page, and I loved his bond with Anne. I loved how gentle and caring and kind he was to Anne, and how he didn’t try to stifle Anne’s imagination or chatter. These two were kindred spirits from the very start, and once again, it was so wholesome to read!!
This century-old children’s classic about an orphan girl moving to Canada is one of the most delightful and joyful books I’ve ever read. If you haven’t read it yet, what are you waiting for?
