Is was definitely worth clawing my way through the first book for the delight of the last four novellas and book 2. The story is really coming to life now, hitting all the right beats to keep you in suspense as the equally weighted storylines weave in and out of each other. Dorians journey becomes much more clear and his character more lovable while Choals struggle between localities offers an interesting point of view whenever we see through his eyes. Celaena, our main character, is at her best yet even as the challenges she faces threaten to overtake her. I think Sarah J. Maas created a truly wonderful main character in Celaena Sardothian and I can’t wait to see where she goes from here.

I really enjoyed this reread. I annotated it this time and it was really fun. I've also been buddy-reading it so that may have helped in my enjoyment level.

I did make notes of passages that stood out in reference to the parallel worlds in these. It's been fun finding little hints sprinkled throughout.

[Second Read - 2017 - 5 stars]

I feel like I enjoyed this book more the second time around. I was able to slow down while reading it as opposed to my fast reading when I'm reading a good book for the first time. It felt like kind of a filler book: used to fill in some of the back story and prepare for the next book, but it was still enjoyable with a little bit of action sprinkled throughout. I'm actually going to up my rating from 4 stars to 5 stars after this reading. I loved the themes of friendship and loyalty in this book, which I was aware of the first time I read it, but paid more attention to the second time.

This is definitely one of those series that you cherish despite its flaws. Celaena is growing on me, Dorian is getting interesting and Chaol is the precious bean he was always destined to be.

If you’ve been on the book side of the internet at all you’ll have had most of the big twists in this spoiled for you without realising but it’s still definitely worth the read.

• This is where people start to hate Chaol (I think? I don't remember)

• I am not one of the above mentioned

• I don't remember what this book was about

• Celeana (is this correct?) white savior complex

• Nehemia: Black character, killed off (Sorscha too)

• The additional star is for Chaolena because I love Chaol

wow, this book did *not* disappoint! id prefer this book to the first in the series, and now there is no way i wont be finishing the rest of the books in 2021, im shamelessly hooked.

im so heartbroken for Nehemia though, why did SJM do... that? i actually think it moved along the plot really well but id really developed feelings for her. gahh
