The ending was absolutely crazy. I feel like it didn’t have to come down to that, had Charles been honest from the beginning. If you cheated on your spouse, they find out and basically lets you know you can work it out…why wouldn’t you come clean about everything? Half truths are still lies & that’s exactly why Charles was laid up in that hospital and lost his wife in the end.

Haven't read this book since I was in middle/high school (early 2000s) but I'm on a mission to re-read EJDs bibliography in honor of his life (he's also one of my favorite authors in life and I've read his books for almost half my life).

I listened via audiobook and it was interesting to hear the story again in an adult mindset. Things that I felt were more fascinating more outrageous as a teen are now concepts that I understand better as life goes on.

What I really appreciate about EJD is how he crafts his female protagonist and the effort he makes to write about black women. They was he describes their appearance, lives and character motivation. There's such a strong relatability that I've always loved and his writing was how I envisioned adulthood to be in some aspects. I also love the way he writes about the various cities in California in such vivid detail

I'll say the story is much like any EJD story when he really pulls you into the life of the character from the their joys to their destruction and it's always a fun, emotional, relatable and some intense ride.

I would give this story a 4/5 still a great read and I enjoyed the narration.

I’d rate it a 3.5. It was a good listen via audiobook. I liked the twist towards the end.

“Sometimes I think about all I do, how I’m trying to be a career woman, a good wife, trying to be everything to everybody and nothing to myself, and I feel overwhelmed, scared, sadness covers me, makes me want to cry. But I don’t, not with tears.”
