I have no idea what to rate this book because I liked it and at the same time I didn’t...
Sometimes I feel that choksi’s strong point is her characters, and not plot because I always dislike her endings (as with the gilded wolves)
I love the research, mythology and the figuring stuff out but when the time comes for the plot twists they seem so predictable and far-fetched that I really hate them..i don’t know, maybe 3.5 stars?

I love these characters so much! I still got confused sometimes but Roshani Chokshi's characters and beautiful writing made me want to follow through. There were a lot of passages that made me stop and look up and simply stare at the wall to absorb the meaning. A lot of lines I want to inject into my veins. I've become a fan, truly.

This plot is going off the rails... I'll be reading the next one because I want to know how it ends, but I have low expectations now.

I really cannot wrap my head around why this trilogy did not pan out for me. On paper, it should have been my special sauce- adventure, fantastical settings, great friendships, a whisper of romance, treasure hunting, troves of clues, ice palaces…. It really should have been my Grishaverse dreams set on forged fire… but it just did not work for me!

First, after 9 days I was only 70 pages in- I forced myself to read it each night and only got a handful of pages done each time (usually I can pull 150-225/night). I read the first 100 and skimmed the last 300. I could not proceed faster!!!!

I also felt a weird tension between mature adult themes but a rather juvenile and simplistic dialogue and plot tricks. But the main one was this: for both Guilded Wolves and this one (I can’t even recall the title?) I literally could not remember a single thing that happened in the preceding chapter, or page, or paragraph. Every clue, every back story, every historical detail, every description immediately fled my mind like a poof of incendiary silk. Strange lack of recall aside, I wanted to LOVE IT. But alas, I did not.

It’s been a long time since I read The Gilded Wolves but it’s a story I think about often so I decided to read the second one. I had to watch a summary video to remember what happened before starting this book, and there will still a few gaps for me. But I must say this is how you write a sequel. So often, sequels seem to act only as a bridge between a first and second book without much of a plot on their own. But I found this book so compelling. The characters had clear motivations and growth, the plot was so interesting, and the relationships between the characters were so engaging. I found myself rooting for characters (Séverin) and at the same time hating them a little (Séverin).

My only qualm with the story was with Severin’s arc. I understand that the motivations he had in this book needed to carry him into the third book, but as a result, I felt like he didn’t make much growth. I really thought the events at the end would’ve changed how he felt about his goal but he just stayed the same. It worked for the story but I would’ve liked to have seen more growth from him.

3.5 stars. I still really love the characters, and Séverin in particular was super interesting in this book, but I didn't love any of the romances, I hated the love triangle between Enrique/Hypnos/Zofia, Séverin/Laila was only mildly entertaining, and of course there had to be another fucking love triangle with them and Eva, which was just irritating. The plot was slightly less confusing than the first book, but only slightly, especially towards the end. Idk I kind of got bored toward the end, but I'll read the last book in the trilogy when it comes out, and I hope Hypnos gets more appreciation because I love him.
