‘The Silvered Serpents’ was one of my highly anticipated reads of 2020. I couldn’t wait to get my grubby little hands on it, and I am ecstatic to say that the author knows how to deliver! This was absolutely phenomenal, breathtaking and everything in between! I am seriously blown away. Usually I don’t have much success with sequels of any series, so I was a little apprehensive going into this read but the Book Gods above were on my side!

We basically started off where we left off ‘The Gilded Wolves’. The aftermath of Tristen's death, which still makes me tear up, and the crew attempts to find the whereabouts of The Divine Lyrics—the ancient book that holds the secret of Forging, the knowledge of how to rejoin the Babel Fragments and—in the eyes of the Fallen House—how to access the power of God. It was darker, grittier, angstier, and more emotional than the prequel. The depressing undertones were refreshing because typically once a centralized character dies in any book, they usually mourn for a few chapters before heading out of the next adventure. Our precious baby Tristan was still very much on their minds throughout the whole read and I loved how the author touched on the aftermath of his death— it was real and it was raw.

I love every second of this book and I must now suffer in silence until the next book comes out. The anticipation is killing me!

I liked this better than the first one!

A couple things though: I can’t get over how similar Séverin’s group is to the Crows? Especially Séverin and Laila’s similarities to Kaz and Inej, I ...

And I felt like Ruslan’s twist was kinda predictable. He seemed too eager and hardly anyone questioned him. But I didn’t see the other twist coming!! So I guess it all cancels out.

ALSO ITS A QUESTION OF WHEN, NOT IF, MY SHIP GETS TOGETHER IN THE NEXT BOOK, AND I WILL CRY, THEYRE THE BEST AND I LOVE ALL OF THEIR INTERACTIONS.

Oh my gosh. I just realized Enrique and Zofia’s Crows counterparts (Nina and Matthias, respectively, don’t @ me, I’m right) are also a canon couple

Erin from As The Book Ends (@asthebookends on Instagram) gave me and my sister, Chiara (@_ckarys on Instagram. Together we form the author duo C.M. Karys), the opportunity to read an eARC of The Silvered Serpents as a guest reviewers on her blog, and of course we said yes. I will leave a link here for you to check out our full lenght review.

As The Book Ends - Silvered Serpents – Roshani Chokshi (C.M. Karys GUEST REVIEW)

This is the sequel of [b:The Gilded Wolves|39863498|The Gilded Wolves (The Gilded Wolves, #1)|Roshani Chokshi|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1525714353l/39863498._SY75_.jpg|53547018], which I recently read and loved, so naturally this was a newly highly unticipated read. The book takes off more or less where we left off in the previous instalment. I’m not going to go into too much detail, but if you’ve read book one, you’ll know the characters aren’t in the best of places emotionally. What I loved about The Silvered Serpents is that the stakes were higher than ever. Conflict ruled the narrative, both within the characters and their relationships. The character development was brilliant and the ending was even more brutal and shocking than that of The Guilded Wolves. Book three couldn’t come fast enough. Roshani Chokshi officially won her place on my favorite author altar.

This is a fun little romp with excitement and not quite as much romance as I expected from the cover description.

However, I found some of the action sequences and descriptions confusing. Mostly I just overlooked the parts that didn't make sense, but two things brought me out of the story. First, the countdown to the big event didn't make sense. In one chapter it was three- weeks away, and then 4 days later it was one week away. I think the author may need a better editor to catch those discrepancies. Second, the book takes place along Lake Baikal, but the description keeps mentioning the "Ural Mountains" in the distance. No. The Ural mountains are two thousand miles from Lake Baikal. A quick look on a map would have easily cleared up that mistake. Every time the Urals were mentioned as a backdrop to lake Baikal, it took me out of the story. Again, I really suggest the author find an editor who can catch these details. Even in a fantasy, things need to make sense.

I’d like to start off by saying that I won this ARC from a goodreads giveaway and I’m very thankful I was able to read this book and provide a review of it before its release. Now, onto the review!

The Gilded Wolves was thick with information that I quite frankly didn’t fully understand. I felt like a lot of things went over my head and I didn’t get a feel for who the characters really were. I rated it a 3/5 because it had the potential to get better.

The Silvered Serpents far surpassed my expectations and I could not put this book down. Since I’ve just finished this book that left off with quite the cliffhanger (and I’ll admit I almost threw this book across the room because of things that I can’t say because spoilers) here are some of my thoughts in bullet points because my brain is still trying to process what this book has done to me

• We get to learn more about Tristan and his past and how Tristan’s death is affecting Severin
• Hypnos is my favorite and should be protected at all costs. His banter with everyone just brings me so much joy and his need to belong breaks my heart
• There was so much more adventure and suspense in this book that just captured my attention. There was also less info dumping that made my brain happy
• Zofia should also be protected at all costs. I love seeing her develop as a character. You see her raw and real thoughts as she struggles to understand basic human emotion and interaction. She sees things in a way that others don’t and there is one part towards the end of the book that had me really cheering for this girl.

I came into this book very skeptical because I wasn’t a huge fan of the first book but here I am, eagerly awaiting the next book and this one hasn’t even officially come out yet. If you weren’t a huge fan of the first book, I highly recommend you at least give the second book a shot because it’s totally worth it.

A few months ago, my sister and I read The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi and fell head over heels in love, which is why when our good pal Erin (asthebookends) asked us to guest review an earc of the The Silvered Serpents, our answer was a very calm “yes”. *insert sounds of lie detectors going haywire*
The following review is also available on Erin’s blog.

The story picks up shortly after the events of The Gilded Wolves, with all the pain, heartbreak and angst that entails. Tristan is dead, Laila is dying, Enrique and Hypnos are in a relationship that may or may not be destined for doom, Zofia struggles with some complicated feelings. Through it all, a grieving Séverin is being an absolute prick (somehow making Chiara love him even more.)

It was interesting to step into a world that was extremely familiar and yet so much darker. Conflict ruled the narrative, both within the individual characters and in the relationships. Love, friendship, loyalty—everything was strained to a breaking point. The character development was incredibly done, and every member of the L’Eden group comes of out this book with new secrets, new revelations, new layers, making them incredibly real, relatable and just overall loveable.
A weaker book would have suffered our busy schedule and editing exhaustion, but Roshani Chokshi’s incredibly lush writing carried us through and kept us on the edge of our seats through every discovery, twist and turn. We will be honest, we thought the story was headed in a certain direction, but come the end of the book, everything we believed was turned against us and delivered one hell of a shocking finale. If you thought The Gilded Wolves was heartbreaking…this is worse. So much worse.

Naturally, this sequel could get no less than 5 glorious stars from both of us. We’re anxiously waiting for the book’s release in September to devour it again and we’re already counting down the days until the third book. Or at least an arc because the pain is real.
