I liked the story. Marillier’s writing is very stunning that it sucked me in instantly like the first book. But unfortunately, I did not enjoy this as much as the first book.

Mainly because the romance was not my cup of tea. At all. Liadan and Bran on their own were great characters, but together, not so much. I do not care for their romance. Not even a bit. So this kinda held the full enjoyment  that I should’ve experienced. It’s definitely a me thing. One week Liadan, really? I just wish it was longer. Idk, maybe six months. Seems realistic to fall for someone of forced proximity during that time. I just can’t get over that especially after the slowburn of book one.
And  I don’t think all those secrets were really necessary. I guess some of them were justified in some way? But Conor’s… yeah I don’t really get that one.

All in all meeting the characters from the previous book was a joy. Especially Sorcha and Hugh. They always have my heart!

I found this second book in the series much harder to like, for the superficial reason that I really disliked some of the characters.

This was a frustrating read. I really enjoyed the first book and was expecting the second to be just as engaging. It took a while for me to become interested in the story, but that did not last long. There are so many things I found annoying in the book.

The first book was more descriptive; it was "show, don't tell." This book was the opposite and some of the "telling" was a bit repetitive. For a girl who was taught as a child how to use weapons and fight, Liadan does not get into much action. Most of the action that occurs in the book does not involve Liadan. There is a lot of talking, too much talking in my opinion.

Liadan got a bad case of Stockholm syndrome. She fits in almost immediately with Bran's group, a team of notorious mercenaries. She was even thinking of leaving a family that she cares SO much about for a man she's only known for less than a week. Huh.
SpoilerI don't understand what she finds attractive about Bran. I personally would not like a guy who hates my family(and doesn't tell me why), who is a killer, or who keeps telling me he really does want to stay with me, but he can't because he's baaaaaaad.

I didn't like a lot of the choices that Liadan made. At least she stubbornly stuck to it to the end.
