George Orwell’s 1984 is a novel that I have been looking forward to reading, as I had heard so many good reviews of this novel. Now that I have finally read this book, I am glad that I took the time to do so. This book is slow to start and demands a lot of attention to read, it is a fantastic book with a meaning that is very relevant in today’s society. I believe that this is a book that everyone should read. It is fascinating and a little disturbing, it shows you what life would be like in a totalitarian government, where you have no privacy or control.
This novel describes a dystopian society that is under the rule of a totalitarian government. The novel follows a man, Winston Smith, and his struggle against the government as he attempts to find the truth in a society built by lies.
This novel leaves you thinking, it does not give you a fairy tale happy ending that you expect from every book. Instead it leaves you frustrated and uneasy about today’s governments and how we could end up like Winston and Oceania. This is one of the best parts of the novel, as it leaves you stewing for days and makes you realize how lucky we are to have what we have, that we were not born into a society that controls every aspect of your life. Another aspect of this novel that makes it so great is how eerily similar today’s world is to the world in the novel. Not only did Orwell predict many things about technology in 1984 that are comparable to the technology that we have in today’s world, in the time that he wrote the novel, technology was just starting out and was no where near what it is today. But Orwell’s novel can also be seen as a warning to not let something like the holocaust and Hitler’s rein happen again. The novel shows us what happens with a totalitarian government and the destruction that they cause. These themes in the novel, paired with Orwell’s overwhelming descriptive capabilities and imagination, makes for an eerie and remarkable book, which is a must read.
This novel delivers a powerful, prevalent message that stands true even after 60 years. This message along with Orwell’s inspiring delivery of the story made even the driest parts of the novel easy to appreciate. I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone who has the time for it.

I was SO DISAPPOINTED in the ending of this book. I probably wouldn't have finished it (or picked it up) if I'd known how it ended. I understand the message and why this is a culturally important book, but for reasons I didn't expect. The story was a little soul destroying to be honest.
