Long but compelling. One of my favorite books I’ve read in a while - while I know Nathan Hill’s writing style might not be for everyone, I love it. I love how he played with structure in this one
This book felt freakishly timely and made me deeply reflective about a lot of aspects of life, especially comparing the anti war movement of the 60s to movements today

By the end I forgot the beginning. Or thought it had been a different book I recently read. BUT I do like this guy’s writing. He gets into some spaces you really don’t expect. I’m going to say 3.5.
I feel SO CONFLICTED about this novel. My expectations were high (probably too high) and I felt a little disappointed while reading it. There were a lot of passages that did nothing for me and felt totally unnecessary. Some things were described way too extensive and added nothing to the overall plot. Honestly, it was kind of boring sometimes.
But there were so many brilliant things about this book as well. It was funny, quirky, touching and emotional. Nathan Hill can write! The bits that were entertaining were brilliantly written. I just think this book might have packed too much. I feel like there are too many different stories here and not all of them were needed for the plot. I loved the ending though, it was truly beautiful. So yes, I would still recommend this novel. There were too many beautiful aspects to leave this one unread, but with 600+ pages it's not weird to feel bored sometimes I guess.

A complex novel that switches between a number of characters as well as time periods. Despite the complexity, the novel is a very compelling ‘family’ story about the sometimes seemingly small decisions that change the course of lives.
