A beautiful snapshot of island life with loveable characters.
inspiring lighthearted relaxing

such a lovely little book. there’s no real plot just like sophia’s diary with her grandmother, spending a summer on a tiny island. their conversations feel so tender and a bit melancholic sometimes they argue about little things, but always find their way back to each other

"a small island, on the other hand, takes care of itself."

this book is very calm. it's very heavy on the isolating, but quiet vibe of living on a secluded island. there's peace and tension. you can feel the sunshine in your skin. you can hear the waves if you close your eyes. you can hear the rain hitting the window. you can feel the old wood under your feet creaking.

the novel follows a granddaughter and a grandmother. they don't have a perfect relationship and they don't try to. their relationship just ...is.

there was only this one island, surrounded by water, threatened and sheltered by the storm, forgotten by everyone but god..."

Such a lovable little book - the characters, vignettes and setting are all perfectly drawn. The short length and fleeting pace add to its summery feel.

this was so wonderful and wholesome, and i honestly could see myself coming back to this sometime down the road. i felt myself taking my time with this and savoring the sweetness of the stories and the beauty of jansson’s prose. this was the perfect book for summer into fall, as we see the seasons begin to change throughout the book, and there’s this lingering feeling of recognizing the inevitable impermanence of summer. my grandmother is an artist, and i was always close to her as a child and had all kinds of adventures during the summer, so this really resonated.

“it was august, and the weather was sometimes stormy and sometimes nice, but for grandmother, no matter what happened, it was only time on top of time, since everything is vanity and a chasing after the wind.”
