Sophia and her grandmother spend summer together on a tiny Finnish island. Its full of the little adventures of childhood and deeply connected to nature. It’s a classic for a reason. The short story nature of it meant it didn’t quite come together for me, but I wasn’t oblivious to its charms.

Usually it’s difficult for a short story collection/anthology to get five stars from me; it usually JUST misses the mark and hits the 4.5 mark. However, this anthology made me laugh and feel nostalgic for childhood and made me excited for life to come. It made me feel connected with the natural world around me and put me back in the place of being a child exploring the world. It felt like a whole, finished, and full collection and created a full summer arc from start to finish. Jansson’s writing was playful and funny and she nailed the voices of her characters so well. I loved this.
