Unbelievable storyline and untrue characters

Very good historical romantic fluff. The characters have believable real-world problems that they handle either well or poorly. The female lead is in art school and the painting details add a fun element.

Audiobook.

It's very well written, but a lot of the tropes (well, to be fair, only one -- that of alcoholism) troubled me, mostly for personal reasons. However, it was immensely enjoyable and I'm eagerly looking forward to anything Lowell writes next.

This book was way more depressing than I originally thought it would be, and kind of made me miserable. You really never liked the 'hero' or 'love interest', he was an alcoholic, didn't care about anything besides himself, and acted like a child. The whole novel I just didn't really get what Lucy saw in him besides the fact he was good looking. I'm not saying he didn't have some redeeming qualities, but it just seemed like he was a giant man child that Lucy had to clean up after all the time. They also didn't have chemistry and overall this book just did not do it for me.

The end and parts of the middle were half decent, but otherwise the book was sloppy. There were far too many subplots and the writing wasn’t concise. The author used big words in hopes to distract the reading for realizing the book literally didn’t make sense.

lucy, a student at the royal academy of art and part-time seamstress, meets anthony, a naked, passed-out-drunk guy in an alley. okay, not quite. turns out, anthony is also the duke of weston, an alcoholic, and a legal child due to the codicil in his father’s will. this book and its characters were interesting, but also uncomfortable to read.

for starters, i’m not convinced that lucy and anthony actually like each other. well into the middle of the book, they still don’t have high opinions of each other, and honestly it’s warranted (on her part). the pacing is kind of strange, and the side characters were pretty boring. the shining star of this book is the yardley gaslighting plotline. it shows the trauma of a torn-apart family and the following exploitation by a man considered family. i actually wasn’t sure how i felt about yardley for most of it. the forced institutionalization part was a bit shocking and turned my stomach, but i suppose that was the point. still, i felt vaguely ill the whole time i was reading this, so this book was definitely not for me.

i absolutely LOVED this story. i loved the change in the man proving himself to the woman who already loved him. to the woman he loved. but proving himself to step up and not be afraid or pull into her fears.
