This book was written in second-person, which is really unusual. It was a little difficult to get used to, because it felt like the main character was speaking to themselves in the narration. I think this is the only book I've ever read that is written entirely in second-person. But, getting past that, this book is amazing. The characters feel real and the situations are heartbreakingly evoked. Complicated emotions are handled delicately and adeptly. The world created here is one that gives the reader hope for the future.

A fun dark twist on fairytales, I guess it should be taken as a compliment that I wanted it to be longer because I wanted to see what happened next.

3 out of 5 stars.
This was not my favourite Silvia Moreno-Garcia story, but it was a fast read and I'd definitely be interested if she wrote something longer in this fairytale-esque genre.

It was a very nice short read and atmospheric!

Une courte histoire atmospherique et intriguante! J'ai bien aimé.

The Lover was underwhelming. There was one plot twist where I thought “Oh I didn’t see that coming” and the rest was trite and pedestrian. Moreno-Garcia’s books start off interesting, but they never end satisfactorily. It’s like she kinda gets lost in her own story or realizes she’s going to be late for her next book under contract and hurriedly ends the story without resolving the story. This short story falls even more victim to that pattern than her books.
