The Lover was underwhelming. There was one plot twist where I thought “Oh I didn’t see that coming” and the rest was trite and pedestrian. Moreno-Garcia’s books start off interesting, but they never end satisfactorily. It’s like she kinda gets lost in her own story or realizes she’s going to be late for her next book under contract and hurriedly ends the story without resolving the story. This short story falls even more victim to that pattern than her books.

I don't know if this will make sense to anyone else but this story had the same vibes as the movie The Company of Wolves.

Anyway, Judith's sister deserves the same fate as Nathaniel (hope she gets it)

The Lover is a short retelling of Little Red Riding Hood; I would say it's a "dark twist" on the original, but the original is also pretty dark, right? Moreno-Garcia packed a lot of story into a handful of pages, and I really enjoyed this version—
Spoilerthe once-upon-a-time setting, shape-shifting magic, the "ugly sister" trope, and a cad's comeuppance,
all woven together into an old+new fairy tale, one of my favorite things.

Glad I picked this short story in the Amazon Prime First Reads for the month of October. I enjoyed the author's style of writing.

I set myself up for this one. I like the author's novels, but as a short story I did not like it. It may have more to do with me because while I knew it was a short story to begin with, I sill wanted more. The ending was too rushed and I just have too many questions.
Thank you to NetGalley and publisher for providing me with a copy.

This was such a good short story. Silvia Moreno Garcia always knows how to write a wickedly good story. I wished it was longer tbh but regardless it was perfect
