If you put 'bees' in the title, most assuredly, I'm going to read it. I find the creatures fascinating and would love to have a hive of my own someday. This book is a historical fiction about a very special beekeeper herself, and a present day woman who is learning lessons from her.

I was surprised to learn this might not be the first in a series per say. Actually, this book read perfectly as a standalone, but I learned at the end of it, there's more books set with this world of characters. So it's up to you to pursue the books in whatever order you would like. We start with Abi, a woman who's been through a lot and comes to the French countryside to a yoga retreat with a friend. Quickly abandoned for a new love by her friend, Abi finds herself making friends with a local property owner, and further, being offered a job on the premises. As she works there, she starts learning its history, particularly about a very special beekeeper named Eliane.

Abi I related to a lot. It won't spoil much to say that she's recovering from an abusive relationship, something that can leave scars not only physically, but emotionally as well. I found her personality very authentic and the needing to build up strength such a powerful message. That she gets her strength from Eliane's story ties the whole book together. And Eliane, while there were a few times I questioned her judgment, overall, I thought she was an interesting character who held compassion for others.

Eliane's story took place during the Nazi occupation of France during WWII. It wasn't a pretty time and I think the book gets that across pretty well. Abi's part was in the future, but she compared experiences with Eliane to try to muster her own fortitude. For pacing, I did think the book could get kind of slow at times or mired in a situation, but it would eventually sort itself out and continue. And it covers some rough topics in regards to the war, so be prepared for some descriptive scenes (although not full on battles).

Definitely an interesting book, now that I know there are others, I'm sure I'll meander their way at some point.

I really enjoyed this book. I felt like the two timelines worked really well together and while the two main characters struggles were different, they were still relatable. I probably enjoyed the WWII part slightly better but both were engaging and interesting.

Finished this audiobook today. A young woman's strength in occupied France during WWII inspires a woman in present day to heal from an abusive marriage.
Bonus - the author's new book, A Dressmaker's Gift, is a Prime Kindle First Read

I absolutely LOVED this book. Was recommended by a friend and I couldn't put it down. I will admit that I didn't really care for the switching POVs... the modern day character, while I understand her inclusion, just didn't click with me so I didn't really care about her parts in the story. I was absolutely enraptured with Eliane's tale and despite my dislike of timejumping POVS, I would read this story again and fully intend to buy this book and add it to my own collection. It was very well written, compelling, that perfect blend of emotional get lost in the book and forget you're reading.

The book is split into two with one narrator (Abi)set in 2017 and the other just before the Second World War and then through it, but staying in the same locations
A clever premise and to begin with I really enjoyed the balance and the gradual reveal of each character but then the second world war character is much more interesting and compelling so I was almost disappointed to come back to the 2017.
However, I think the bit that jars is that in modern times, it is revealed that the WWII characters are alive and the modern-day narrator Abi can meet them and then they were so thrilled to meet Abi , and had "heard a lot about her" - why? She was just doing a summer job at the hotel? If the character had been researching them for a long time it might make more sense how overwhelmed she is at meeting them when in reality she has only heard about them through dribs and drabs a 6 week holiday.
I enjoyed it as a read but the ending just didn't sit right in the end

two stories told in parallel one of which is much stronger and more compelling. The other isn’t boring but the device connecting them didn’t work for me. Luckily I found the one half strong enough to make this an enjoyable read

Beautiful story of resilience and love that goes back and forth between WWII France (Elaine’s family) 1939-1944 and Abi in 2017.
