I didn’t really enjoy this book and since that is such an extreme from how I thought I would feel (and other reviews) I wonder if it has anything to do with having listened to it. I did enjoy components of the book, but there seemed to be too many small side vignettes that distracted me from the characters. I also found the accent of the reader to be distracting and it challenged me to concentrate on the words she was saying as opposed to the storyline. I think I’ll try reading this another time on paper rather than listening so I can give if faithful effort.

Usually I am enthralled by how two stories end up intertwined by the end of a book. In this case, even the one story of France during the war was enough to keep me captivated.

What an amazing book! I couldn’t put it down- even when I was not reading it I was thinking about it! This book brought a different perspective to WWII. I loved the strong personalities and the love and sacrifice shown. It was awesome to see how hearing about Eliane’s story brought courage and meaning back to Abi. Great book- a must read.

Wanted to rate 5 but couldn’t because the start was a bit slow and tough to get in to. Loved loved loved it though

This is a wonderful story about courage and the strength to be true to yourself even through the darkest times. The story is presented very well covering two time periods. Abi is a young widow who is looking to heal in Rural France. As she takes on a summer job at the Chateaux Bellevue, she learns of the story of Elian during German occupied France, her love, strength, family and the dangers she’s endured during those days. The story is told in alternating time periods between 1938-1944 and modern day 2017. I found this story to be so nicely descriptive of the beautiful countryside of France as well as the devastation of the effect of war. I’ve had this book in my kindle for over a year and I’m so glad to have finally read it.
