This story was much deeper than I thought. I really enjoyed that the plot was strong on its own without the romance and that the romance was well developed but fast paced. I thought it was very interesting they actually showed the torture and that the end was all about bunky getting back to himself after rather than just finding him before he was harmed

DID NOT FINISH: 30%

I really tried with this one, and I almost thought I was gonna make it. I’m all for some crazy love and shit, but omfg. Bunky… duuddeee, WTF. Also, Whaley and Bunky are terrible names, unless it’s like a prison romance or something, that’s honestly what I was expecting… and after having ‘met’ Bunky, it’s totally a possibility for their future.

For the most part, I don’t mind age-gaps, but wow, does the gap between Whaley and Bunky feel fkn massive af. It doesn’t help that in the prologue, Whaley rescues Bunky when he’s was child and Whaley was 25, so you know there’s a big gap. 15 year gap isn’t too bad, but even with the time jump of 10 years, Bunky is very much a teenager. His mental state doesn’t help either, he reads much more like a hormonal and crazy 17 year old or something, than an almost 19 year old who has lived the life he has.

In Whaley’s defense, the age is a problem for him, so it’s not like he’s a full creepy perv right off the bat, like it could have come off. Bunky hasn’t a fk to give about the gap, but that’s not abnormal for a fkn teenager lol. Whaley is def more rational than Bunky, but he’s still a nut bag too. I was quite amused by Bunky’s straight obsession with him, like he had stolen treasures of Whaley’s that he hoards, and a stalker photo collage of candid Whaley pics hidden in his closet 😂. The visuals were strong af, even with all the time jumps and skips that happen.

While there are some interesting aspects of the book, and unhinged MMC’s are usually a favorite, I just cannot deal with Bunky’s crazy right now. I might revisit this some day, but idk, it’s a different kind of crazy where it’s not as fun and enjoyable to read because you’re actually concerned. I was down for some crazy, toxic type shit, but I think it would have all been a bit better if Bunky was at least a bit older? It’s not the gap that’s the problem, but how absolutely young Bunky reads, it puts his actions on a different level.

My DNF moment came after the like 10th-ish time Bunky just started screeching/screaming at something, this time because he was jelly that a customer touched his obsession, who’s been steady ignoring him. Whaley was def a bit of a dick too and it was getting annoying because he was def fucking with Bunky by playing with him like that and he should have known better than anyone how that would go.

The writing was pretty decent though, I was def sucked right in to the story, and ended up reading longer than I should have because of it. I was def confused about some things since I didn’t read B1, but it was still quite immersive and intriguing.

This was the dark, obsessive, feral romance I have been needing!!

I loved how Bunky and Whaley really saw each other and just loved each other as they are.

It took a long time to get going which was a little frustrating, but once they got their act together I loved them as a couple.

They both have very dark, gruesome back stories and what Bunky goes through in this book is devastating, so make sure to check the trigger warnings before reading.

This isn't a traditional romance in any sense. It is an obsession that makes sense to two people with a lot of emotional trauma, and it's highly toxic and unhealthy, but for me it made absolute sense for these two. They were never going to be cutesy like Silas and Blaine, and Raid and Landon (next book) have a much more innocent feel to them also. I've loved both couples in this series so far and have no doubt I'll also love Raid and Landon. If all of their relationships developed identically there wouldn't be a point to them all having their own books

This is the second book in a Standalone series and can be read as a true Standalone. Whaley is the leader of the Aces and is hardened against the world. Bunky was saved by Whaley and as he got older he became obsessed with Whaley. What happens when two people who have deep feelings finally get together....well it's this book. I couldn't put it down and wanted to see what was happening and where it would go next. I definitely want to read more by these authors.
