This was the first Walsh family book I have read. I listened to the audiobook because it’s shortlisted for audiobook of the year.

I liked that Marian Keyes narrated the audiobook.

It was quite long for such a primarily lighthearted book (with acknowledgment of heavier topics, but mostly it was very romcom) but I liked that it meant a I got to get to know a lot of the characters quite well at different stages of their lives.

I picked this up because I read Watermelon ten years ago and I remember really enjoying it and I think Marian Keyes is very funny. For the first part, I really loved this book and it made me laugh a lot but then out of the blue about two thirds in it felt as if an entirely different person wrote it? The story became so superficial and every possible strand of plot was being tied up in a picture-perfect way where absolutely EVERYTHING works out splendidly and it just became less and less believable.
The whole relationship with Joey and how they apparently had been absolutely mad for each other for decades seemed to come out of nowhere, and then next thing whoops her ex-best friend who hadn’t wanted to speak to her in ten years all of a sudden has a massive change of heart and the two of them fall back perfectly into being super-besties.

The whole last third felt like reading one of the Colleen Hoover destined-to-be-together romance books I used to read as a teenager, and had none of the humour or depth from the beginning of the book. I wasn’t expecting or wanting a fairytale love story read but even personal preference aside it just felt like the beginning and end were completely unmatched. BUT, 3 stars because I really did enjoy the first half!
