I adore the writing style of Jennifer E. Smith. She has a very distinct way of writing, and I fall in love with her characters every time I read one of her books. This book in particular showed a great use of obstacles. I was surprised at almost every turn in the book, and pleasantly so. I also loved the dialogue/ email communication that’s laced throughout the book. Right off the bat, there’s an immediate sense of who the characters are and what their relationship is like.
An okay teen romance although I felt the plot at was over complicated at times and then didn't resolve all the plot threads. Like with the estranged father. Its hard to feel invested in that whole side plot when the reader is only told about what kind of character he is and then never actually see him interact with the main character. Made the climax a little soapy and overwrought.
4.5 stars -- ok, so I will admit that after I finish a book, I sometimes go and read other reviews on it.... I prefer to have it be all my own thoughts, but I get curious you know?? But after ending this one with a big grin on my face, I was sooooo surprised at how many people *didn't* enjoy it. So I guess I'm in the minority here.
I was hooked right from the first e-mail exchange. The correspondence was just hilarious and adorable, and I could see the instant connection between the characters. I really loved how much Graham wasn't a normal movie star. He was just such a sweetie.
I guess my biggest disappointment is that I wanted more -- would love to know more of their journey. An epilogue. Bonus scenes. A sequel....anything!
I really enjoyed the insightful thoughts the characters had throughout the book too. I don't always get the highlighting, but there was parts that I found myself just intrigued by the way the author described a situation or whatever.... It made me think.
So yeah. I thought it was cute. I'm a sucker for a movie star meets ordinary person love story anyways, and this one just totally worked for me.

Is it just me or does Jennifer E. Smith have the longest book titles ever? This aside, This Is What Happy Looks Like was one of my most anticipated 2013 reads. While it isn’t quite as flawless as The Statistical Probability Of Love At First Sight, I still found Smith’s latest book to be a very swoon worthy read and especially loved the coastal Maine backdrop. If you’re a fan of stories where the characters fall for each other through anonymous correspondence (like You’ve Got Mail) you should probably pay attention to this review because chances are This Is What Happy Looks Like will be right up your alley.

This book had basically no substance, but it was a good beach read while I was trying to read and talk to friends at the same time, so it served its purpose.
Very, very easy read. And even though I'm not a sucker for this type of cliché, I can confidently admit I enjoyed this book. If you're looking for something to transport you to another world in a time of distress, this is it. I'd recommend it to pretty much anyone, just don't expect this book to be "life-changing" or anything, because it's absolutely not.
