I'll probably have a longer review later but honestly there isn't much to write about here.

Have you seen episodes 4-6 of Star Wars? Well then you have also read these books. They are everything that was on the screen just written down. Only somehow boring and dry.

There is no life to the stories here, it is written like someone watched each movie and transcribed what he or she saw. There is no extra insight into the characters or their motivation or any extra descriptive flourishes to bring it to life in an entertaining way.

Plus there is no warning as you move between each viewpoint. You are with Luke and then suddenly Leia and the Han, etc. it's really off putting.

These books are not for everyone but they are sort of interesting.

These stories were cute and fun and I loved the chemistry between Han and Leia. The writing was a bit juvenile throughout the entire book though. My attachment and love of these stories is more because they are nostalgic for me and not because they are well written and arguably the best book ever.

A New Hope
I would not say that George Lucas is an excellent writer. He has a bad habit of slowing down the slow sections by adding more description. This book is nearly a word-for-word transcription of the movie, with a few extras added in here and there. If you are a fan of the movie, it is worth your time to read, if you have nothing better to do.

The Empire Strikes Back
This book has its good and bad parts, just like the first one. I would say that I like this writer's prose better, although the author does have a few awkward phrases here and there. Empire, as far as I could tell, was almost a completely literal transcription of the movie, and I wouldn't suggest reading it if you just want to watch the movie.

Return of the Jedi
The prose in this book is the worst of the three. It isn't all awful, there are just a handful of sentences that are awful. The action scenes at the beginning of the story are very exciting, but after that, the book seems like one big wind-down. I would almost skip this one altogether, if it weren't that it does complete the trilogy.

Star Wars.

DID NOT FINISH: 56%

I read the German version however it was translated really badly with zero connection to the German movies whatsoever. Therefore it used entirely different words and phrases which bothered when reading.

It's been a long time since I've read the Star Wars novels, but I think I can remember them accurately enough to put in my two cents here - these books are fun. Despite the first novel being written by Lucas, the prose can feel professional; the editing, while not perfect, as there is a lot of strange and unnecessary stuff, was well-done in terms of professionalism. The latter two novels feel better overall, as they were novelizations rather than straight up novels, and this works to their benefit.

I'm really glad I decided to read this. I've seen the movies more times than I can count, so I know the story by heart. I found myself reading dialogue in the actors' voices, and I even heard the soundtrack in my head in key places.

Still, despite knowing this trilogy so well, I really enjoyed reading it. There were a few "deleted scenes" here and there, and it gave a lot more insight into what the characters were thinking and experiencing as the story progressed.

I highly recommend these books, even to folks who have seen the movies a million times. They're a quick read, since you already know the story, but they'll make you look at the movies and characters in a whole new light.
