Ein Buch, das wirklich gut altert. Schon als Teenager hat es mich begeistern können, aber auch heute finde ich es noch wunderschön aufgrund seiner zeitlosen Sprache, der magischen Atmosphäre von Visible und den liebevollen Figuren, die definitiv ihre spitzen Ecken und scharfen Kanten haben.
Das einzige, was mich ein bisschen gestört hat und was mir früher nicht auffiel, sind eine Handvoll problematischer Szenen, die einfach präsentiert werden, mit deren Problematik sich aber nicht weiter auseinandergesetzt wird. Zum einen die Szene mit Annie Glösser: Zum anderen die Szene über Phils erstes Mal:

Die Erwachsene Annie, als geistig beeinträchtigt vorgestellt, animiert den kleinen Phil dazu, sich vor ihren Augen in der Privatsphäre ihres eigenen Zuhauses am Geschlechtsteil herumzuspielen während sie ihm erotische Fotografien von Frauen zeigt. Die Szene hat nichts Bedrohliches, ist eher ulkig, und Phil scheint sich nicht von ihr verstört zu fühlen. Trotzdem finde ich es bedenklich, dass nie irgendjemand mal in Frage stellt, wie unangebracht die Situation war und dass Phil davor geschützt hätte werden müssen.Spoiler
Nicht nur, dass das ganze von seiner Mutter und seinem Onkel eingefädelt wurde, das ist ja schon irgendwie unangenehm, es ist auch die Rede von einem griechischen Jungen etwa in Phils Alter. Wir erfahren nie genau, wo der Junge herkommt und wer er ist. Wurde er "für seine Dienste" bezahlt? Ist er ein Kinderprostituierter? Und wenn ja, wie können Glass und Gable so etwas unterstützen?? Auch hier stellt Phil selbst rückblickend nie die Situation und ihre Umstände in Frage.nelly1507's review against another edition

Steinhöfel's writing style is heaven, Phils passive behaviour sometimes made me freak out, but it made freak out other characters, too, so it was a problem that had been tackled

i don’t really know what to think about this book, the best word i can think of is interesting. it took me a while to get into but once i did i couldn’t stop reading, the characters were really intriguing and there were a lot of twists that i wasn’t expecting. at the beginning the timeline confused me a bit and made it hard to read but after a while i got used to it and i liked the style of it switching between present and past in a not linear way. the writing wasn’t always easy to read but i liked the parts where it was more philosophical and deep

This book is soooo literary it reminded me of my MFA days. Mostly because I knew exactly what I’d say about passages in a workshop.
Maybe it was just the translation I read but a lot of the word choices made it read like an adult writing a teen story and not authentic.
I have the same issue as other reviewers here with the constant flashbacks but it’s the style of the narrative. I ended up skimming and skipping to the moment I wanted to be reading.

This is a truly wonderful book, in fact, one of the best books I've ever read.

This is so real and genuine. It doesn't have a set ending but that's OK since life doesn't either. I liked that the location is ambiguous. I took it to be Germany as that's where the author is from but it's never specifically mentioned.
