For some reason, I thought this was the first book in the series with "3 Body Problem"... but it wasn't. So I was pretty disappointed after the first short story ended and I realized I wasn't reading Liu Cixin's famous trilogy, but instead a collection of short stories. I haven't read so many short stories before, and the format is unusual - each story accelerates so quickly, and then just.. ends.
Nonetheless, these stories are filled with brilliant and mind-provoking ideas. Liu presents both futures which may very well be a near reality and futures which are totally unimagineable (<-- not sure if this is a word).
I really do want to get to 3 Body Problem soon, and look forward to my next reads of his!

I found the character empty husks to carry a good story. The characters lacked depth and nauance and so did parts of the story. I think because it was so fast paced and could have benefitted from being longer. However I enjoyed the story and have reflected on it a lot.

Sexist - this reads like sci fi from back in the '60s. All female characters are limited to cameo rules, and all are love interests, described in phrases like "her lithe body writhing rhythmically" as she flew across the sky, "dainty specimen moved to tears" at the sight of a flower, with, of course, "cascading hair." Bonus: in one of the short stories, the government sponsors free sex for all residents; apparently the author either doesn't know or doesn't care about historical sex slavery sponsored by the Chinese government. Gross.
