Read for the URR 2017 New Year's Reading Challenge prompt 'Romantic Suspense'

Beware some vague spoilers pertaining to the killer

17/8 - This was not the romantic suspense novel I was looking for. Luke, the 'hero' was depicted as a stalker and to begin with, from his thoughts and actions, I thought we were in the bad guy's head not the lead who we were supposed to find attractive. I don't know what readers Krentz thought would find a creepy motel owner following a woman around late at night, even after she made an effort to leave the motel without him knowing about it. It certainly didn't work for me, I was just annoyed that Irene didn't tell Luke to get lost.

The mystery was pretty good, but by the time we got to it I was already irritated by Luke and the mystery wasn't good enough to forget about the bad 'the hero's a stalker' taste in my mouth. By the time the irritation had faded the mystery suddenly became a problem when a tape made by the original murder victim (Pamela, childhood friend of Irene) reveal more of the red herring's motives. The problem occurred when Pamela reveals the red herring's identity on the tape, but she strangely neglects to tell Irene who she shared all her conclusions with just before she was murdered. Obviously Krentz couldn't tell us who it was because then we couldn't have the climatic 'It ain't the red herring, it's this other seemingly innocuous character that we never would have guessed might be a bad guy' ending, but the way it happened was just stupid. Why wouldn't Pamela tell us who she talked to? Why would she just say (quote straight from the book on page 325)

'"...I told someone I thought I could trust about the video and what I had done with it. Later, after I heard what happened to your folks, I realised that person must have called Daddy in San Fransico."'

It makes absolutely no sense that she wouldn't tell Irene the full truth. The story would have worked much better if Krentz had written that the tape had become damaged right at the important bit, rather than that Pamela just didn't reveal the name for mysterious reasons that no one would ever believe.

It seems I've previously read two more of Krentz's books and given both of them two stars, too. That rating seems to be becoming a pattern and does not bode well for the two other Krentz books that I own. I will still read them, but not till the two star vibe has faded at least a little.

Alright, so I've had this book sitting on a shelf since last summer awaiting to be read.. but I hadn't wanted to read it until I was done my list of other books I'd wanted to read.. Anyways, the other day I finally picked this book up and I'm glad that I did, as I really enjoyed it.

All Night Long is about Irene Stenson who gets an email from her ex-best friend Pamela Webb asking her to meet her in their hometown, Dunsley. Pamela says she's got something important to tell Irene about what happened seventeen years earlier, when Irene's parents allegedly killed themselves in a murder-suicide. When Irene gets to Dunsley she finds Pamela dead, and being the reporter she is, her instincts tell her there's more to what's going on then what's on the surface, so she remains in Dunsley to figure things out.

Anyways, I hate giving things away about a book's plot, so I'll leave it at that.

This book was really good. From the very beginning I was hooked. There was enough twists and turns in the plot that I didn't ever get much of an idea of who the culprit was or how the book would end. The one thing that did need a bit of work was the romance, but as this was a romantic suspense novel, it was fairly good, I suppose.

All in all, a good read and definitely a good book to tear myself away from paranormal stuff for a bit.

Predictable but fun. It definitely got pretty suspenseful towards the end, and there was one plot twist I didn't figure out first. I wonder if she has written another book featuring Luke's brother.

JAK’s [b:All Night Long|29616|All Night Long|Jayne Ann Krentz|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1309209604s/29616.jpg|1847252] was a romantic suspense on par with a story written by Sandra Brown or Linda Howard. When Luke Danner and Irene Stenson first met. each carried a guilt concerning their immediate family. For Irene, it was her haunting past and the question, ‘What if....?’ For Luke, it was about his immediate family and the members with all their concerns. The question was, ‘Should they be?’ Concerned, that is.

Luke was an ex-Marine and an alpha male. If I met him for the first time as Irene did, I would even add a little bit stalker-ish to his profile. And maybe a tad self-asserting but in a contemporary fashion. I appreciated that Irene had a handle on him. She didn’t let him ruffle her feathers with his bluntness.

And it would not have been a RS without a murder. Or murders, I should say. There was a dark theme that the reader will discover along with a few solid secondary characters. And some good chemistry between Irene and Luke. Like many RS stories, it took place over a period of days but it wasn’t an annoying issue like I find it sometimes.

I had my suspicions: my personal hunches of who did what and why but I have to admit JAK threw in a few game changers in the last third of the story. All in all, [b:All Night Long|29616|All Night Long|Jayne Ann Krentz|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1309209604s/29616.jpg|1847252] was a quick read.

Finally reviewed after my "seventh" (see notes below) reading, June 23, 2017.
5 stars - outstanding/amazing

I love this book. Irene is a wonderful protagonist and Luke is fabulous, too. I really love them together.

I was sort of nervous about reading this story, considering that yesterday I read JAK's latest release - [b:The Girl Who Knew Too Much|31624980|The Girl Who Knew Too Much|Amanda Quick|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1473954635s/31624980.jpg|51398738], written as [a:Amanda Quick|42211|Amanda Quick|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1362431091p2/42211.jpg] - and was underwhelmed. I worried that maybe I wasn't in the right mood to appreciate my favorite author's writing, and that that was why I failed to fall in love with The Girl Who Knew Too Much. Instead, it seems that my complaints - in my review - were right and true, especially seeing as how I read and LOVED this book. From the first page through to the last, I was sucked in and loved every word. :-)

So, back to my love for this story. . . When Irene was 15, her parents were murdered. She never believed that her father killed her mother and then himself. And now, 17 years later, the secrets surrounding her parents' deaths are starting to unravel. :-)

Unfortunately, I have read this book so many times that I know who the killer is. And I can't now remember if the twist in the end ever took me by surprise. But I imagine it did. I probably figured out who it was just as Irene and Luke did.

Also, about my having read this book "so many times," I decided that six readings in the past "seemed like a good number." But I don't rightly know how many times I have read this story. Probably at least seven, possibly as many as twelve. ;-)

(That last paragraph was written after my "seventh" reading on June 23, 2017.)

I mentioned laughter, and tears, somewhere? Up above, I think, and in one of my status updates. Please allow me to share a few scenes. . .

First, Chapter One, pages 6-18, is just delightful. This is the chapter where we first see Irene and Luke together. I sort of smile-snickered at a number of lines in this first chapter. :-)

Then in Chapter Eight, pages 65-69, every time Jason Danner, Luke's youngest brother, said "Boy, howdy" I again smile-snickered. :-)

I laughed again on pages 88, 91, 117, 176, and 209. :-)

I'll share the quote from page 209, in Chapter Thirty-One, Irene
is trying to reassure Luke's family. . .
"If it helps," she said, "I can assure you that there's no need to worry about about Luke's erectile dysfunction problems."
"Irene," Luke muttered, "If you don't mind---"
"He's definitely normal in that department," Irene continued quickly, eager to make her point. "Actually, he's a lot bigger than normal."
A great hush had fallen across the entire restaurant. It dawned on her that everyone was staring at her as though mesmerized.
Jason grinned. "Boy, howdy."
Bigger, she thought, had been an unfortunate choice of words.
"I mean better than normal," she said quickly.
She could tell immediately that the hasty rephrasing wasn't quite right, either.
"I feel a little faint," she said to Luke.
"That's funny, . . .
LOL!!! :-)

I had tears forming in several places, too. On pages 77, 311, and then at the end.

On page 77 (Chapter Nine), tears only formed - they didn't fall - when Irene was shopping for groceries and
Tess Carpenter was kind to her after she repelled the busy-bodies.
I don't know why that scene put tears in my eyes, but it did. :-)

On page 311 (Chapter Forty-Nine), it was
Irene's kindness to Sam
that did me in. Tears did fall for this scene.

And then the ending made me cry. It was just sooo happy. I really just loved it. :-)

So this is a wonderful book. An engaging story, fabulous characters, exciting scenes, it's just everything I most love to read about. I really, really love it. :-)
