Thought it would be a bit more complex. Good for beginners into business strategy as it introduces the concepta and then gives multiple real life examples and companies across different industries

Not my cup of tea, but many of my co-workers in R&D loved it!

There is some actual useful info in here but it’s buried underneath piles of rambling fluff. The actual content could be summarized in 30 pages max without losing any nuance. I’ll say a lot of info in this book also seems quite obvious - as in not deceptively simple but like actually just simple. I also think there’s sort of a disconnect between who the publisher seems to be aiming this book at vs who the book is actually written for - which is upper management at a company. The figures/graphs in this book are also awful and go against all standards and conventions that would make them easy to parse. This is not to say they’re too complex to understand - they’re simply not well designed. Finally the authors biases really stand out in this book - from making weird comments about “the lumps” in women’s leotards to their regular use of the word “winos” to describe people to spending 2 chapters basically falling in love with the police chief who brought stop and frisk to NYC - it’s just a lot. Final comment yellow tail is not a blue ocean strategy by their own standards it’s just bad wine with good marketing so idk why they bring it up like probably at least 50x - especially because “easy drinking” just means a wine is sweet rather than dry and not complex which the cheap wine industry has been doing for years.

The overall premise of the book is, don’t compete directly with your competitors, create new markets. "The goal from Blue Ocean strategy is to create uncontested market space that makes the competition irrelevant." But it needs a serious update (written in 2004). He made a good prediction of the future Blue Ocean needed for the movie industry and then Netflix stepped in.

The last chapter was interesting and I wished the whole book was like that.

Notes:

The only way to beat the competition is to stop trying to beat the competition.
