This is something every American should read. It brings some much-needed perspective to the traditional history we all learned in school.

This book reveals the essence of what has made America great throughout history. The willingness of every day people to fight for what’s right, not just against kings but capitalists too.

If that sounded good until the very end, this book is for you, too.

One of the most riveting and important history books ever written for understanding American History from a perspective often left out of history textbooks. A must read.

This book is really a discussion about how the government exists to serve business interests first and the people second. It's a self admitted biased view of history that portrays the U.S. government as a means to keep business successful, secure wealth for the privileged and give the masses just enough to keep them from revolt. It also ties in how the government used race tactics as a way to pit the masses against each other instead of letting them bind together and focus on the government.

It's very eye opening to think of history in this way and there are many events here that I was completely unaware of before reading. The downsides of this book is that it's very long and the narrative is biased (by authors own admission) which makes it harder to take everything as written. In many ways this is a book that gives an overview of dozens of points in history that would be interesting to pick up a book on and dig further into the events.

Howard Zinn never set out to write an unbiased, neutral history of the United States. This would be an impossible task, he explained from the beginning, because with such an abundance of information available one is forced to chose what to include and what not to include. That choice is already a demonstration of the writer’s worldview. Frustrated with the lack of coverage of so many important facets of U.S. history in traditional books — such as class struggle and systemic racism — Professor Zinn set out on a clear mission: to tell the largely untold history of the people of United States. The result is an important book that fills many of the gaps left by the traditional works. The narrative is clear and the stories are gripping. And you never have to wonder where the author is coming from. He told you from the start.
A must read for anyone seeking to learn a different, less glamorous, side of U.S. history, which should, in my opinion, be all of us.

Easily the best general US history with an emphasis on the everyday and the impact of power and progress in US history.

Tough read for the sole fact it’s 400 years of History and the History is sometimes soul crushing. Incredible telling of People’s movements and the forces that have oppressed them for Centuries. Recommend for history buffs and a reader with a conscience.
