A slip of a book but a great story.

Baseball novella by Stephen King. Blockade Billy was a killer fo' sure who didn't get a fair shake in life.

I can't praise this one enough. Silly, yes. But the writing is perfect. Perfect. So baseball. So masculine sport. Plus, so Stephen King.

I must say that King flourishes in telling a good sports story. You get past the horror aspect of most of his work, he's probably among the best story tellers in literature.

Cutesy little way to spend my monday afternoon-
If stephen king writes it i’m gonna eat it up every time

Nice short story!

Fun short story that mixes 1950's baseball with Stephen King. It was a good ride.

3.5 stars

I'm not a huge fan of short stories in general, but Stephen King is about as good as they get as writing them. He is able to get a complete story in there without leaving you with big gaps or a cliffhanger ending.

The reason for the lower rating here is because of the second story, "Morality". It wasn't bad, per se. It just wasn't very interesting or believable to me. It's like a rehash of "Indecent Proposal"; except the billionaire is a priest who doesn't want sex, he just wants the woman to commit assault. I did not buy into why a priest would want to know what it feels like to commit a sin by proxy. I can believe that people are weird enough to want to do that, but I didn't buy that this guy would want to do that. King spent way too much time on the couple mulling over the offer, then on their eventual collapse. That's all well and good but the real story (in my mind) was the why not the what.

"Blockade Billy" was great, though! I'm not a big baseball fan, but I love watching die-hards get into telling a good baseball story. It made me think of the story in the middle of "Good Will Hunting" when Robin Williams and Matt Damon were pantomiming the home run at the end of a World Series game. This story had that same feel of excitement and awe. Then the ending was pure Stephen King as well. This would be a 5 star favorite if it were just about that short story.

I feel like this one is for a very specific audience: me.

Baseball and Stephen King are among my most favorite things. So this worked for me. I'd get why this wouldn't work for many, many others.
