I might be overly generous in my rating here, but I liked this book A LOT. It is trying very hard to be funny, but the beauty of it is that it works! I actually laughed out loud several times, and snickered and giggled a lot in between. At first, I was concerned that the hijinks would keep me from actually connecting with the characters on an emotional level, but I need not have worried. The both of them really grew on me. Would I appreciate some more depth? For sure. But I am invested in the overarching plot, and I‘m really rooting for these two to find a way forward.

Everybody knows that this story started its life as a Dramione fan fiction - one I‘ve never read, so I can‘t say how it compares. The plot here stands on its own, and I can‘t wait to find out where it all leads. And, of course, I‘m going to have to wait, because this is yet again a duology. With a mild cliffhanger. Well, let it be known that I am VERY seated.

DID NOT FINISH: 27%

I just can't. I feel like I'm reading A Clockwork Orange with all the made-up verbiage (NOT a compliment!) While more than a few lines have made me laugh, I don't care about these people or this story. Life is too short to continue this slog.

I really wanted to love this book but unfortunately it fell a bit flat for me. It should have been right up my street, it had all the things I love, enemies to lovers, bit of mystery and some magic. For me though the whole tone of it was off.

When I first started it I actually thought, ooh I like this. It was funny, witty, had some great banter and I really liked the world. However I thought the tone would change, that there would be a little more depth and a development and growth in the characters and the relationship between them but it just didn't happen.

It felt like the whole thing was surface level with nothing really happening other than some bantering and fights between the two leads. There was no depth and no real feeling. Neither of the main characters was likeable and honestly I didn't really care what happened. I was pretty close to DNF ing more than once.

The relationship at the centre of the story was less slow burn and more no burn. There was zero spark and very little spice which was really disappointing.

It seems it's also the first in a series rather than a standalone. I don't think I'll be reading any further.
