This took me longer than I expected to read, as the language is older and some of the themes were progressive at the time of writing, but oddly mixed in today's culture. The story is good, though, and thought-provoking.

At least once a year I like reading a "certified" classic. This year, "The Last of the Mohicans" with illustrations by N.C. Wyeth flew off the library shelf and into my hands. Here's the deal: see the movie with Daniel Day Lewis as Hawkeye, and Wes Study as Magua, and a lot of other good actors beside. The movie will give you a feel for the scenic beauty of colonial America, and the physicality of the characters, It's breathtaking. Then, read the book. You'll be in for lots of surprises as the story takes twists and turns that Michael Mann (the director) couldn't possibly keep up with, violence that takes your breath away, and a layer of humor that the movie totally missed. And the language - oy! Beautiful english that waltzes around the page.

I know this is supposed to be one for the kids, but, it's adult fiction that's absolutely stunning.

This is also a nice heavy volume with big print, and beautiful, albeit very romantic, illustrations.

I have not read the original version of this book, but an adaptation, especial for those who want to learn English (and that is why I took this one). I liked this story. It happens quickly, mainly written in simple periods and, always, action after action (it has not time for the reader take a breath). And this may have confused me in many moments of the story. Other point that has bothered me up is the fact that the Indians are treated here as villains, evil people, whereas the white men are treated as the victims, the innocent people. And we all know this is not the true, things did not happen like this. And this made me way too bothered along the reading. However, it is a great story, with a surprising end (even though I do not think it is unpredictable). I cannot wait for watching its cinematographic version!

Roy Thomas decided to keep much of the same language used by James Fenimore Cooper for this graphic novel, which was an interesting decision. I think it was a great nod to the novel, and yet made for slow reading.

I didn’t really connect with The Deerslayer, and was at times even confused as to what was happening.

I appreciate the push by Marvel to illustrate these classics. While this one was a bit slow, I imagine it’s more succinct than the novel, so it may be easier to read.
