It wasn't that bad, but it wasn't perfect either. For me Ash's appearance was out of place and not necessary at all...

Reread. Poppy and James were never my favourite but it’s a good start to the series.
fast-paced

OKay....so this wasn't good by any means, but it was thoroughly entertaining and a very quick read. So basically, if you have any secret (or not so secret) love for shit TV shows like vampire diaries, this is right up your alley. L.J. Smith just has the teen vampire thing DOWN. I actually haven't read the Vampire Diaries books, so I don't know what they are like compared to the TV series, but as ridiculous as that is, I have a soft spot for teen vampires. Who doesn't love Damon Salvatore?? And thats kind of how I think I am going to feel about Ash in this series. I am not a fan ATM, but I'm sure something will change.
None of these characters have any complexity or very compelling qualities, but its the kind of thing where you continue because you need to know what kind of hijinks they get into. How far will it go?

This was a surprisingly good read to me. I expected to encounter more cheesy wording and events but it was actually pretty entertaining. The plot was well thought out. There was one twist at the end I did not anticipate, that made me very happy. I love Poppy and Phil's sibling relationship. Not sure what Poppy's dream is foreshadowing but definitely feels like something to do with the witches. Excited to continue the series and see what book two holds for the characters.

Please do your self a favour and DON'T start this series! - or at least not yet.

Seriously you will be waiting for the final book for a long time! I've been waiting for the last book (Book 10) in the series for 4 years now (as of 2012) and I consider myself lucky- some people who read the books as they came out have been waiting nearly 15 years! (Book s 1- 9 were released between 1996 and 1998)

Wait until book 10 is released and then start the series. I don't mind starting an unfinished series as long as a new book comes out every now and then ideally at least 1 or 2 books a decade (or century/millennium), but it looks like after leaving us on a cliff hanger L.J. Smith isn't going to be writing an ending any time soon.

1 star for the RAGE I feel about book 10, otherwise it would be 3 stars.

edit in 2023: hahaha

Such a quick read! I loved the concept of this book, along with the characters. The author leaves so many unanswered questions about the Night World and its creatures that readers can’t wait to dig into the next book.

Not the best vampire that I have read. If you want a relly, relly good vampire book you should check out Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead or The Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost.
Well, Vampire Academy is not like The Night Huntress. The night huntress series is more young adult then Vampire Academy, but I love them both.
