I WASN'T PREPARED FOR THIS! Oh, James. Oh Poppy. My heart can't take it!

I loved this book from start to finish. Although I will say, this book was cheesy. Once things started picking up toward the end and Poppy met Ash, I could kind of predict what was going to happen, but I didn't care. I still loved this book.

I actually could not put it down. Usually when I say that, I just want to read and read and read. This time it was literal. I stayed home almost the entire day reading it, and when I had to interact with the real world I brought it with me, which I never do. I need the next one!

I'm not sure what to expect from other Night World books, so far I have read few short stories (that I should probably have left for later) either way it didn't wow me but it was not bad as well. Just like this book...I'm giving it 2 stars because it didn't captive me, it's not one of those books that you would consider reading again and I doubt I would ever recommend it to my friends. All in all,I'm being critical but I will try other books as well because I like the fact that there will be different characters and different storylines later on.

I liked this book, but it was hard to get into and finish for me. They hint at what the disease is, but never actually say it I don't think I believe it to be some sort of advanced stage of cancer of some kind. I love vampire books, but this one just wasn't what I was expecting.

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuugggghhhhhh! I wish that this book was longer, longer by maybe 100 – 200 more pages. One of the best books I’ve read in a while.
The only other complaint that I could make was that the end felt a little rushed.

I first heard about this book through the FOREVERDOG podcast Teen Creeps (Links to both the entire catalogue and the episode in question below) and they made the book seem like a good read, so when I managed to get to a used bookstore, I picked up a copy for less than $5 and it ended up being my last entry to finish my 2018 Goodreads Reading Challenge.
I could have read this book in a day, but work and overall adulthood life stretched it out to a few days.

I have a guilty pleasure with the Twilight franchise of books and films and I’m guessing that it would have been 1000x better if Edward and Bella were more like James and Poppy.

Poppy grew on me very fast. She has a great personality that would fit right into a real-life world. I did feel bad for her when she got sick and had to make the decision to join the Night World to save her life. Her thought process during the situation was believable, which not a fear of dying, but the fear of not existing. She has such an electrifying personality, that I’m sure that she would be friends with just about everybody.
P.S. Poppy is such an awesome name, I wanna name a cat or a dog that!

James and her twin brother Phil, are also great characters. James has been friends with Poppy since they were 5 and has an idea of her affections for her but seems afraid of getting too close and Phil is the over-protective (especially to James) brother that hates what his sister is going through, but ultimately realizes that her decision may be the best thing for her.

Not sure if I’m gonna read the rest of the series (which is about 10 + books), but if they are as well written, I might down the road.

I would recommend this to anyone who loves a quick read with some awesome writing and characters. L.J. Smith, I applaud you!

Picked this up after it was recommended to me by my friend and I must say, Night World was pretty fun. It was fast-paced and easy to read. After reading this, I do have to admit that it has whetted my appetite to read the rest of the (incomplete) series.

Night World by LJ Smith is the first novel in her Night World series. First published back in 1996, the series introduces young readers to werewolves, lamia (vampires), and witches.

Age Shows
I am a massive fan of LJ Smith, having read the Vampire Diaries series when she still wrote it, but I can say I think my age is starting to show.

Night World is very much written for young readers. Night World is a light and fluffy read. Sadly, there is not much depth to the writing or the storytelling, but that does not mean it is not worth reading.

The novel follows Poppy who is quickly diagnosed with cancer. At only sixteen, her whole life is ahead of her. Her friend James she finds out, is a vampire and offers her a choice, death, or life as a vampire with him. Poppy chooses life as a vampire, even when it means leaving everything she has ever loved behind.

This novel is a perfect light read for young readers. It does lack depth. Again, this is an entertaining read, a quick well-written read. The character dynamics are there, and the personalities are there. It only shows in its age.

As we read, the more we read, the more society changes and grows, the more that writing changes. Back in 1996, I do not think we were wholly aware as we are now. Alternatively, at least, literature was not. The bulk of Young Adult novels back in the day did not deal with today’s issue because voices were getting shut down before they could make a noise.

It shows in the writing. Night World is not incredibly thought-provoking; it is simply a story meant for entertainment.

Some Issues
Like I said above, Night World is a light story, a quick breeze to read. Furthermore, while it is well-written, it does suffer some narrative issues.

Poppy’s internal narrative is incredibly annoying. Poppy’s internal narrative is self-involved which makes it difficult to be invested in her character. Yes, she is dying, but there is so much more going on that she is not thinking about. It takes her time to register that her death will affect her mother, father, and brother in ways she had not even thought about.

Moreover, again, there is that issue of the story lacking depth. Again, not every story has to have depth or subtext to it. Not everything has to deal with a current or social issue, so do not expect that if you read this novel.

Final Thoughts
Overall, Night World is a good novel. As the first book in a series is does an excellent job of establishing the characters and the world, LJ Smith is building here. Maybe as the story grows, it will improve as far as depth, but for right now, it is a good light, clean read for all ages.

Kind of predictable but I like Poppy and I am intrigued to see where the series goes. I got the vibes I had as a teenager reading Twilight and the nostalgia will keep me going until the storyline picks up an identity do its own which it kind of did at the end of this book.
