This is such a terrific read! This time around it did not seem junior high-ish. LOL! Just the first in an interesting series. This time I have all of the books so I can read through the entire series! I can't wait!!!

I tried to go back to my old passion about vampires and I realised I have to give it up. I've read enough vampires stories when I was a teenager and now I'm 28 years old and I don't enjoy them as much as I used to. Probably it was the story, because I'm done with teenagers falling in love and all that drama.
or probably it's just me... I should go back to The Vampire Diaries and finish those books and I'll figure it out then!

Not really what I was expecting, but still very good, not that much for me as an adult, but definitely better YA than most of what I’ve seen. Of course there is a lot of romance and that was my first surprise I didn’t expected it to be as much about the relationship as it was. But it’s an interesting relationship, even more if you think is was written in 1996, a teenagers having cancer and everything surrounding it was kind of «new» or at least less frequent at the time, the author also didn’t fall into stupid clichés, stereotypes and tropes, like instalove or the love triangle. My second surprise and worst deception was the fantasy/supernatural element. The story isn’t as much focus on it as I would have wanted it to be. Those elements are well developed but always introduce in a weird way. Everyone just accept it too easily. The last thing I want to talk about was the characters who were likeable and interesting, and the writing which was more than good for this genre, very fluid, fast paced, not too flowery for no reason, etc.
For me it would be a 3 stars, very fast read, enjoyable but not enough to get me going with the series. But for younger reader, both boys and girls, I think this can offer a fun ride and really take the transition between middle grade and YA, since it’s really easy to get into and kind of small. So I gave it a fair 4 stars. Not what I was expecting but in a strange way maybe better than what I was expecting!

While reading this book i often found my mind wandering to other things when it should have been in the story. I liked the beginning of the story and how we are introduced to the "Night World" and the way that the female protagonist it brought in to it. That being said there were a lot of troupe moments that i have seen in many other YA stories about Vampires. I also listen to the audiobook while i read it and at times i found myself really disliking the narrators voice and the way she had certain inflections and pronunciations of certain words. I think if i continue with this series i will opt out of listening to the audiobook.

I have to say I was actually impressed with this novel. After being completely underwhelmed by The Vampire Diaries series I was apprehensive to start this one. However, I believe LJ Smith really knocked it out if the ballpark with this one.
Poppy is a 16 year old girl who is completely bubbly and full of life. She has a loving family and friends that adore her. Her life is perfect in so many ways... Until she is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Her life quickly goes on a downward spiral.
All of this is changed by a revelation made by her best friend, James. He decides he will do all he can to ensure Poppy lives.
I believe I was more impressed with the ending I didn't see coming more than the book itself. But the book was still very good.

I’ve been a huge fan of The Vampire Diaries ever since I picked it up over ten years ago and I had hoped I could love another of L.G. Smith’s work, but I really can’t endorse this book. The premise is intriguing, and had so much promise, but it all moved far too quickly with little conflict involved. What seemed like major storylines were dealt with within the space of one page, with characters changing their whole perspective on something ridiculously fast. If this one book was fleshed out over three, I would have enjoyed the suspense far more.
Not to mention the frequent mention of Dutch hardcore music was an interesting choice to say the least. It definitely brought me out of the story and the mystical tone to think about the two main protagonists doing jumpstyle..

I really loved these books as a teenager and recently i was reminded of the series... So i just had to do a reread.
I really enjoyed this one, it's a good introduction to the series and I really like Poppy and James and even Phil. Its a quick story so not a whole lot of depth but it is still fun. I am so excited to read the full series.... I'm so sad that it never gor finished

Fun story, fluffy read. I tore though it in one sitting and enjoy how the series all connects. Some of the descriptions are great, there are clunky parts and the resolution isn't strong, but still ok.
I am glad I picked up this book despite it being a little slow in the beginning. It took me a few tries to actually get into it but after awhile I was hooked. I enjoyed all the characters a lot but I feel like they didn’t really have personalities that stuck out to me. Maybe further on in the series you are able to get more of a feel for their different personalities. The actual storyline was very interesting to read but it did give me a bit of anxiety at some point haha. I like how this book was just the start of a story and that in just this book it was dragged out just enough that you need to read the other books for more. Overall I was really happy with this book and it was a good book to get me back into reading finally.
