I gave up on "Teen Vampire" books back when I still was a teenager... However, this book had been sitting on my shelf for years and I thought I would give it a chance.
It was actually really entertaining. It is very 90's, but I found it charming and funny. There is no insta-love, no air-headed heroine getting herself into trouble, and no overly brooding teenagers. There were some concepts I had never heard before. For example, "Lamia" which are vampires who are born and actually age like humans, but still require blood to live and can stop aging if they choose.
This book follows Poppy, an optimistic young girl who finds out she has a deadly form of cancer. Her family, including her twin brother Phil, are all very distraught. Poppy's childhood best friend James might hold the key to saving Poppy permanently.

I quickly got into this story. Poppy was lively and playful and a bit bouncy. Phil I didn't like at first, but he came to grow on me. James, I couldn't quite decide. I liked him, but still have reservations. This book is dated. You can easily tell it is a 90's style teen novel. Pre Young Adult genre lol. Short and interesting and fast to read. I really felt for the dilemma Poppy was in but I am not sure on how she reacted at times. I look forward to learning more of this Night World and hope to see more of these characters.
Delicious paranormal romance. High on action, limited on character development. Still puts twilight to shame.

I was a little disappointed in this book. It started quite well with Poppy being sick and her vampire friend saving her from death by changing her.
But the story is quite empty, I thought it really lacked depth which is a disappointment because it is very well written.
I'm not sure I'll read the rest of the series.

This book was wicked good. It kind of reminded me of the Twilight series except that the main character actually turns into something in the first book and that it's worth reading. I'm definitely going to read the other books in the series.

read this bc nostalgia really hit and i was reminded of the old lj smith books i owned .. which means i knew what i was getting myself into .. the fucking feeling reading this gave me was amazing i was transported back into my 2000's trashy teen paranormal fiction days and i had such a great time i can't even explain it

This book is my childhood favourite. I loved the introduction to vampires. I loved Poppy as a main character. I love James. It was just perfection for my preteen heart.
