The Deja Glitch fails to add anything original or worthwhile to the stuck in the same day loop romance. The writing itself was fine, but I mostly felt myself just wanting the book to be over for two thirds of the journey. I also disliked the overemphasis of blood family, forgiveness without talking about the need for boundaries, and the dismissal of other toxic behavior. I don't really care how well things end up, it would be nice to start having these kinds of stories stop relying on unhealthy behaviors, especially with the background of this author. I promise, it can be just as entertaining when the MCs are showing healthy characteristics. Definitely a miss for me on this one.

Have you ever had déjà vu?
I used to get it a lot as a kid. Or I would dream, and then it felt like I lived the dream. It was the weirdest feeling ever! I haven’t had it for a long time though.
Gemma is muddling along just fine, she’s making a name for herself in the LA music biz, she’s got an amazing best friend, and she has an adorable dog. But something isn’t quite right. Ever since her ex-boyfriend used her to get a record deal from her music legend dad, she has enacted a no-dating rule. When she crashes into Jack one fateful morning, she feels like she’s done this before. She just can’t shake the déjà vu feeling every time she looks at him. Then Jack tells her that she has done this before, in fact shes met him everyday for 5 months. Gemma is completely oblivious, but Jack is insistent and persistent. Will he finally get her to recognize him this time…or are they destined to do this loop for infinity.
I was looking for a delightfully wholesome and fun romance and that is exactly what I found with this one. Even though this story has been told before, the author told it i
n a new way. I enjoyed how the story took place over the course of one day. The growth that Gemma and Jack went through was great. While it did seem like a lot happened for one day, I related because I too have had days where so much happens it doesn’t seem real. The only downside to this one, is that it was utterly and completely predictable – but it worked and I’m okay with that every so often.
I really enjoyed this one and I hope you check it out August 1st.
Thank you to the publisher Penguin Group – Dutton, @duttonbooks, and Netgalley, @netgalley, for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The rom-com screenwriters need to get on this one! I love a good groundhog storyline, although I kept expecting the day to start over and it never did. Overall though, the story is cute and compelling and quick to read. But I think if it were a movie I would LOVE it.

Gemma meets a guy at her best friend's birthday party and it ends with a magical kiss that she's still reeling from the morning after. Only things keep happening that give her a deep sense of deja vu, and the guy from last night is back with some pretty unbelievable news, the day has reset and she's living through the day once over.
Time loop stories have been done to death, but James manages to make this one entirely original by making the main character not be the one aware that they've lived the same day over and over. We get to experience everything for truly the first time with Gemma even as Jack constantly brings up the fact that this isn't his first (or 100th time) living through this day. It's a nice twist that keeps the pressure on Gemma while emphasizing what's going on in the now.
It's fun and really explores living the day to its fullest. I loved every detail of Gemma's relationships and how they evolved with her experiences as she navigates through the very eventful day.
Happy thanks to NetGalley and Dutton for the fun read!

Trigger warning:
1. if you have a broken relationship with a father who puts everything and anyone else ahead of you and has never loved you or prioritized you, don't pick up this book.
2. If your father was a cheater, and his extracurricular relationships broke your family, don't pick up this book.
3. if your father has ruined your ability to trust men, don't pick up this book.
Jack, a TV writer, finds Gemma, a radio producer and a daughter of rock royalty, to tell her that they are stuck in a time loop, have been stuck living the same day 147 times. She has her brother, Patrick and her best friend Lila, and she has a sh*tty ex-boyfriend, Nick.

It was an entertaining read. It's not heavy sci-fi, so don't go in expecting that. It's more romcom than anything. But it was quirky and fun.
