Beautiful story, captivating and very well written. Robbie’s part in the war was a bit long for my taste, lots of descriptive, not too much action.

Slow at the beginning, I felt like Atonement hit it's stride about half-way through. I would love to discuss the ending with someone and am eager to watch the movie and see if it measures up.

Was extremely disappointed in this read and took ages to get through due to my hatred for it

I wish I could give this book 2.5 stars. I did enjoy it, I don't mean to say that I didn't. The details were thoughtful and not excessive, and the characters had the intellectual complexity that made the unravelling of the story all the more intricate. However, in Part I, I was very much aware that this was a male author writing female characters. Cecilia simply puts on a dress and it's described nearly as a sexual experience. This, and other moments like it, does have a tendency to induce eye rolling, but after Part I the characters are established and the author shifts his focus to how they interact with their new environments. The epilogue is a wonderful addition to colour the previous events of the book, though sometimes the information doesn't always seem necessary.

All in all, this book was an enjoyable read, though it lacked the finesse and depth that would leave the story resonating with you long after you finish it.

Worth it to sink into some awe-inspiring, gorgeous prose, but I felt pretty detached from the story and characters.
