It was a really gripping telling, but I found the ending extremely unsatisfying. Therefore the low rating.

Another book read in less than a week. I’d read 2 other Christina Henry novels and enjoyed them, so I thought I’d give this a try. And it was an interesting read. Less scary in the sense that there is a monster hunting on the mountain and more horrifying in the way humans are real monsters. If you want a quick, not so scary but gripping novel this is a good choice.

Felt like a slog to get through. Not to mention the unbridled rage I felt reading every horrible thing this William character did made it hard to digest. William as a whole felt like a caricature and I think the point of the book was “monsters are human” but it was very heavy handed with it. The character of C.P. Also how he was written was just so annoying to read. Lots of nit picks I wished the monster itself had been more present and active like a good ole’ monster movie but alas this wasn’t it. The ending also felt incomplete? Not sure how to feel about it.

This book is intense and dramatic, but something was lacking. I never really connected with the characters, and as with any horror story, I didn't get the closure I was hoping for.

This book started off really strong, I loved the atmospheric creepiness of being isolated in a cabin in the woods, far from civilisation with a man you’re terrified of and something else sinister, lurking in the trees.
I did feel at times it was repetitive & I was frustrated with Mattie and her helplessness - but that was of course intentional.
The ending definitely left me a tiny bit disappointed - I wanted more of a solid conclusion.

I was going to DNF but was close enough to the end to power through. Inconsistent characters, weird trauma representation, and tone inconsistency in dialogue.
