Plot or Character Driven:

The short stories in this collection were as enjoyable to read as they were emotionally moving. We get to see a of a variety of characters experiencing wildly different things in their lives, but the stories are all tied together by the thread of African identity or heritage. Adichie is able to capture a reader's attention by way of truly spectacular story telling and character building while also leaving the reader with an idea or feeling that follows them long after finishing the book.

What a beautiful collection of stories. Makes me long for stories of my country that resonate this way. Makes me long to know and read of my people this way.
Sometimes, you find this great author you always want to read. Whenever, wherever. Adichie is this one for me. I’m never disappointed with her. Since I’m not a native English speaker, this is even more important to me. Her style is so powerful and clear, that I follow everything easily, without this impression of trying to find my way in a different language. I’ll just listen to her voice and loose myself in the story.
She’s a great teller, which definitely helps, and he way she depicts America talks to me too, of course.
The stories included in this collection reminded me of some characters and topics in her great novel, Americanah but were all, in their own specific way, intense and moving.

Third work I've read by Adichie and third 5-star rating I've given. Will be reading more...
Adichie does not disappoint. Her short form flows as effortlessly as her novels. Little to add.
Excellent, well-written collection of short stories. I love her writing style and need to read more of her works (the only other I've read is Half a Yellow Sun).
My favorite stories in the collection were:
- A Private Experience, about two women from different religions who shelter together during a riot
- Jumping Monkey Hill, about a group of African writers at a retreat
- The Thing Around Your Neck, about a woman who comes to America on a work visa and begins dating an American from a wealthy family
- The American Embassy, about a woman who cannot bring herself to talk about her son's murder, even to gain asylum in America
- The Arrangers of Marriage, about a Nigerian woman who enters into an arranged marriage with a Nigerian medical resident working in America and is baffled by his rejection of their Nigerian culture

Love this author! While these are a bunch of short stories, any one of them can be great beginnings for a new book!
