A really solid sequel that expands this world so much. While the pacing is a bit all over the place, and the segment with Lucy at Ravencrest felt a bit too setup focused, I can’t deny the ending was great. I particularly enjoyed how Mistress Mara gets redemption, not being as bad of a person as she’s initially portrayed. The lore that’s added with her and Death is also great, and the Land of Stories easter egg in that scene was a nice little touch as well :)

this was not as good as the first book, but was still fun nonetheless. i was able to read it in a day! the book just truly flies, i don’t know how Chris Colfer does that every time.
in my review for the first book in the series, I talk about the very big sense of politicalness and strong, strong, underlying tone of activism, and it’s overall preachiness. this one definitely tones it down, but the allegory and activismness (that’s not a word i know

This took me coppletely off guard with how much I loved it! To be honest, my expectations weren't the highest. I adored Land of Stories as a younger tween but wasn't sure if I'd enjoy this series. But it was soooo sweet and funny and atmospheric, and it is a middle grade, but I still adored it and would recommend to younger readers, fantasy lovers, and anyone who has struggled with depression, because this book had one of the best portrayals and applications of depression that I have ever read. It was so healing, it was so heartfelt, and it rang so true. I loved these characters and their quirkiness. Now I wanna reread the whole original series just for the nostalgia! But I'm very excited to pick up the final book of this trilogy, hopefully soon!

Charlotte and I read this book for bedtime. This is her review: I really liked this book. It had great plot twists. The characters were really funny. It's the second in the series, and I liked this one as much as I liked the first one. I've put the third one on hold and can't wait to read it.

It is an un put down-able page-turning adventure that weaves friendship, feminism, socialism, and politics into one witchy tale.
This sequel brings mental health issues to the forefront but adds curses, jinxes, hexes, and eye of newt for good measure.
With just the right balance of activism and fantasy plus a great build up for a next book, Chris Colfer has once again came up with a very enchanting addition to his magical universe.
